The key cut by the locksmith is a 'Clone' of the original key. They both have the exact same transponder ID number, that's why you can't programme them both in.

That's what I'm thinking of too but he's adamant that he never cloned the key, virgin transponder and tried to programme straight to the system. I've ordered a new chip so will try it again when it arrives

good to see u ignored this

if you read forscan PATS stuff - lots say if it won't do two keys you must delete ALL keys and start again - obvious risk if you then get stuck you''ll have no working keys

2. Focus Mk2/CMax

Module initalization function is used here when instrument cluster is replaced.

If HEC/IC or both HEC/IC + PCM are replaced, the following sequence of actions should be performed:

i. Erase all keys
ii. Program at least 2 new keys
iii. Do module initalization (Dual coded access may be required)

It is important to realise that it is the car that gets programmed to recognise the ID of the transponder chip, the key/transponder does not get programmed in any way when using a genuine key.

Timpsons the shoe repairer and key cutter, is King of the clone keys. They use a special 'blank' key with a electronically programmable transponder chip. When they make a new key for someone they simply clone the ID number off the existing working key. They never even see the car that the new key is for, never mind programme it.

I usd an auto locksmith who was with the car and specifically says its not a clone but unable to link it. I have now got a ford chip that I have just replaced and will try again

I've just learned (noobie obviously) that after erasing the keys in the system my original ford key might not be re programmable? So I have to replace my original key with a new chip. If so i have another one here that I can fit into the key

As I've said before "the key is not programmed, it is the car that gets programmed to recognise the ID number of the PATS chip in the key"

You can delete the key from the car and re-add it as many time as you like. The passive transponder chip is 100% reusable.

The action of adding any key to the car always automatically clears ALL keys from the vehicles memory and ALL keys have to be re-added at the same time, one after the other.

Update*

Managed to get the car started.

After erasing all keys, I used my original key as it can be re programmed as a unique key. I then replaced the chip in the new key that was made and it successfully stored the key so the chip was the problem, then module initialisation (had to do that twice) and the car started straight away
