Cross compatibility questions (kind of)

Featured Replies

Does anybody know of a source of a list of items that transcend between models on the same platforms or even cross platform compatible parts for instance...

I am aware that there's (5?) main platforms for fords range, I've got to the basics of knowing that the Mondeo and S-Max are the same one but is there such a catalogue or reference chart that says say "X" part for "X" car also fits "A,B and 7"  I'm thinking like mainly brake parts, suspension parts but possibly more spicy bits like turbos, intercoolers, or injectors.

The reason for this question mainly is because there are far more bits known to be available for say Mondeo and focus but not so much S-Max... Etc.. if there was a reference it would be helpful for many people (and maybe me)

Feel free to heckle me if this has been asked or there is a simple answer I've failed to find.. 🤞

Edit:: maybe this should be in the modifications section... Sorry,🤣

The Galaxy is so similar to the S-Max that they share the same parts catalogue.  Though you're probably not going to find many spicy parts for a Galaxy either.

There isn't a list of parts in the way you're hoping for unfortunately.  The same engines are used across many models though, so if you tell us which engine you've got then we can say which others share it.

Mines the 2.0tdci 147bhp variant... Going for a remap next week though.

I was thinking along the lines of parts for suspension etc.. strut braces and anti roll bars for Mondeo fitting S-Max etc

Focus rs brakes that sort of thing.. from what it looks like the Focus/Mondeo ST calipers look very very similar to what is already on the S-Max which would make sense given the slightly heavier bus that it is, so the only logical upgrade from the blue oval parts bin would be (in my mind) the focus rs caliper and disc combo behind a set of wheels that fit them obviously..

If there is a reference manual for say Mondeo suspension geometry and S-Max geometry with dimensions etc that would be ideal, I have found some parts diagrams but not many with dimensions on and not from the same source which would be better as they'd be more reliable in my mind that they had been done/measured in the same way..

It's either this or I just go buying parts and offering them up and see then selling stuff that doesn't fit..  this is not ideal in my opinion as it takes more time effort and ££££ which I have all of these things in limited quantities... 🤣

Then we get into the realms of bodyparts and styling and all the options catalogue etc... it never ends really..

One thing to check with those wheel nuts is that the contact face is wide enough. Some original Ford wheels have oversized holes for the wheels which is taken up by wheel nuts with wider bevel washer to suit. But the after market nuts can be narrower leaving only a few mm of actual contact between the wheel bore and the nut. Thread size & pitch and angle of nut to wheel face can be a match but width of the contact surface is critical too.

Example those nuts would fit my Oz’s ok but not suitable for the OEM ST wheels.

As for which parts are suitable across models it is very hit and miss - best matches you’ll get is for vehicles which shares the same platform i.e Mondeo CD32 or CD132, original S-Max, Galaxy etc plus some Volvos and Freelander 2 were all on the EUCD platform going back to 2006 ish

Cool thanks I'll double check... I didn't even think about that. I went to put a wheel on to check fitment etc and couldn't get one of the ford wheel nuts off due to it having that daft chrome cap that's made of cheese or something... 🤦

Yeah hit and miss about sums it up at the minute.. I've looked at some suspension parts and basically for some struts/coilovers the parts were the same except for the spring rate and possibly valving internally, so that kind of gives me hope... I'm likely going to be upsetting the wife for a couple of weekends doing a deep dive on platform and model dimensions and see about any commonality between them.

That engine was also used in Focus, Mondeo, Galaxy and Kuga as well as several Peugeots and Volvos so there should be plenty of upgrade parts available for that.  Many were 163bhp as standard, I'm not sure whether there were any hardware differences restricting the 147 or whether it was just the mapping.  Will be interesting so see how much a mapper can get from it.  I'd estimate around 180bhp?

There isn't a single compatibility checker in the way that you need, but much of the information will be available in individual forum posts across the internet.  Just takes a lot of time to research.

I wouldn't expect Mondeo suspension parts to be suitable due to the extra weight of the S-Max/Galaxy.

Struts and springs probably not but maybe strut braces, ARBs drop links and bushes perhaps... That's kind of what I am wondering about...

See attached photo... 🤞 The torque is the most impressive part...

Looking at that, it must just be the mapping that limits the 147 compared to the 163!

@troy45

This was a massive help and saved me a headache in a couple of weeks time, Thanks..!. The wheels I've got are from a Jaguar and need flat bottom nuts, but the Jag nuts are 12mm thread not 14... So although it's costing me another £80…!!!! (😳) It's hopefully a problem that's solved now.. 🤞🤦

I'll be keeping the other nuts for the original wheels to have all season tyres for the winter months.. 😎👌 may even get them refurbed and black as well (only a maybe...)

Glad it helped, I’ve got an X-type wheel as a temp spare for my Focus which also needs flat bottom wheel Jag nuts but thread size was a match at least

I did find some flat to taper engineered washer adaptors... £7..... Each!...  I'd rather have bought the Tegiwa import nuts at £160 for 20.(They look nice)
