Grinding noise Intermittent

Featured Replies

We are getting an intermittent grinding noise when driving, we have checked the disc and backing plating and all look normal. Please see video attached https://vimeo.com/1059294821/535be0d79d?share=copy

Mine has just started doing the exact same thing, its an automatic and just gone 50,000 miles. Thought at first it was brake discs grinding / backing plate / or even a small chip made it's way between disc and pad, but have had these checked out all round and not issues there, noise seems to be a bit more regular now, particularly when coming off open road and then coasting at 40 or so in built up area, and more noticeable when turning left ever so slightly.
Couple other sites and forums suggesting it's low or dirty transmission oil, will get this looked at tomorrow, but just had annual Ford service back in October, so would be surprised if it was that.

Interested to hear if you got anywhere with the reason for this noise, as it is the exact same as mine went, mine sounded like it came from the offside front?

Cheers.

Sounds transmission related to me.

Yeah that's my worry now! Checked the gearbox oil and there's plenty there and looks very clean, beginning to think there is a bigger issue!

Be good to hear back from OP @JackMiller what the verdict was on this noise?

Has anyone found out what was the cause of this?

Sorry for the delay in updating - took it to a local garage and turns out it was my driver side drive shaft and bearing and all good now, turns out the bearing was in bits and worst he's seen! Yet I had van jacked up when noise originally started and nothing to indicate play in the bearing, I've had bearings go before and I've always had that 'tell tale' rumble coming from them which gets louder longer you leave it, only indication from this thing was an awful grinding noise it would periodically make!
Mechanic said he did one couple months before mine that was making a whistling noise when pulling away, but would clear by time had bit of speed up and into 3rd gear!? They all thought is wasn't the bearing till they stripped it back and that one was knackered too!
So it seems they don't go the way a bearing used to go traditionally!🤷‍♂️
Anyhow, all good now and delighted it wasn't the gearbox.
