Issue with the lights on the dash (I think the BCM)

Featured Replies

I've said I would help a friend out who isn't technical in this and went to a car garage who has tried to ask for £1600 for a new BCM because it needs to be specially ordered in and coded. I didn't agree with this and said drop it at mine and we'll see if we can figure it this out.

The issue is the lights on the dash are intermittent so it's either the dash cluster or the BCM might be failing. I did a bit of Googling and I suspect the ECM which controls data input along the CAN bus line to the BCM which handles the lights on the dash could be down to a faulty BCM.

I've also read that to look at something more in-depth that's designed for Fords that Forscan is a recommended tool alongside the OBD LINK Ex cable. I've also found a replacement BCM that matches the one that has been removed but the question is how to transfer the data which I assume is stored on some type of EEPROM chip. Would it be feasible to drop in the as-built data (again from researching) into the new BCM which would effectively be the as built data that came with the car using the Forscan tool to program onto the replacement BCM

There is a company that also does this for £95 with the replacement donor BCM and replacement BCM. Do I need to be aware of any issues with key coding or immobiliser issues or should this in theory be suitable? I don't again forgive my ignorance but believe I would need to worry about the immobiliser as I'm not doing anything to the PCM so PATS should not be affected.

Can you explain more about the lights on the instrument cluster. what are they ?

I will be more in-depth with my answers tomorrow as I was only briefly looking at it but the lights behind the speedometer don't seem to work properly, there is a hazard warning light on all the time but not visible from the outside. It doesn't look like the functionality of the instruments is faulty just the light but as the previous garage mentioned the BCM needing to be replaced, this is where I'm starting with my diagnosis.

I've asked my mate to give me a full breakdown of what the garage said and then we'll just go from there and figure it out.

Explaining what car the fault is on would help too

Sorry Dave. Had no further information purely just the instrument cluster doesn't have lighting and the previous mechanic suspected a bad BCM which is why I'm barking down this tree. I've ordered an OBDLink EX Forscan https://www.amazon.co.uk/OBDLINK-EX-FORScan-OBD-Adapter/dp/B081VQVD3F/ref=sr_1_5?crid=2X1EM4UQ4AV9P&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Yq7AsDJW0_cNZOHr7_IeeU5i-8C2HQCr0kTKvC-syWTPf3IsE4BedzCzvsukNAE5G8WYtqIa_iIFb68V4yohvYMvwqx-Cay81BQ9BtcaGF7v2_B-o0YGHqDsfUWYa-4hS4DUxAqQqI0jQCG_u2_jMP5ihzHGQ_X_bpNNka9wctxsO8WMjdvuEMAcoofLU_zhZmpnvQXzzyGS-xje-YYnpyAXBMRbgjXFWjYBrjD47zCUdnCz5odT0LxYQvSyMi1313w3Mf-BVU76Bv1uZg0KdQ1NBD-ziMt85OToZFlcoBsxUmwKwvIycKtMFlvw_WtjutXQVem90q34hquS624HWJduPPiJk64Dxy-whli_5nrDx4FtY3rWM6Cd1T5FKtH2.kUpxdDerwtcRdZrqHu_jDXe_3mcfAI78uloVZFoZ1LA&dib_tag=se&keywords=obdlink+ex&qid=1740488367&sprefix=obdlink+ex%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-5

As my assumption is this is the OBD more geared specifically to Fords and should be able to give some type of fault DTC code? The plan will be to get the cable plugged in, check for faults and go from there.

Unfortunately the issue hasn't resolved itself. New bcm with a recoding and when the car is locked via the fob, the windows all come down on their own. Can we look at programming this out using a forscan cable?

Looked like the lights on the cluster would intermittently go out. We couldn't ever get them to fail on their own no matter what we tried so that's when we moved to the bcm.
