Removal of AWD on 2015 Ford S-Max - Is this possible?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Having problems with a 2015 Ford S-Max which is being used as a taxi.

I'm wondering if the rear AWD assembly can be removed, and the car revert to front wheel drive.?

It's really not worth spending £2000 + labour to replace a faulty rear diff, unless someone knows of a cheaper fix?

Many thanks

Adrian

Second hand diff ? Plenty online google is your friend. Im not sure, and i stand to be corrected, but cant you just remove the propshaft from the transfer case (if there is such a thing) I dont know ive never had a awd for many years and that was a Kuga.

I belive not, doubt the ford has lockable diff in the transfer case ( more a pickup thing on road cars). Meaning if you remove propshaft , the flange out from transfercase will be spinning while you try to drive. while the other wheels will stand still. Same as if you normal front wheel drive, and one wheel is not touching the ground, that wheel will spin ,and the one trying to move you forward will do nothing.

I do not know the ford system. But I belive the easiest fix is a second hand rear diff.
Gearbox fix is probably to take out gearbox, dismount what you need to dismount transfer case. And permanently lock the diff there.
or change to fwd gearbox if that is possible.
But I would for sure go for the 2nd diff.
awd is so much better in wintertime also. 🙂

You would need a 2wd gearbox and remove the AWD control modules from the system so probably PCM and CCM and ABS

Just fit a 2nd hand diff, not new
