Best alternative to Skype now that it's being discontinued..

Featured Replies

I've used Skype for years now. I have a very small contact circle (2!), and find it easy to use and reliable. In preparation for Skype being shortly decommissioned, I downloaded, 'Teams', can't work out how to use it LOL Seems you have to send out an invite to a contact just to make a call? Much more suitable for business use.

I want something really simple, like tapping on a contact which makes the other person's phone 'ring' and they can accept or decline call. I don't need any features apart from video chat. Cross platform would be handy, Android to IOS - any suggestions? (Oh, WhatsApp is out, sadly it's owned by FaceBook which I won't use...)

What about "Amazon View Call" that's not owned by FaceBook 👍

Only teasing you, there's no such thing but I know how much you love Amazon 🤣

I've never used it myself but only found out both Skype & Teams were owned by Microsoft this week.  I did wonder what the difference was between them.

I tried Zoom a few times during the pandemic, but that also requires a link type invite so probably similar to Teams in that aspect.

Google Meet might be more suitable?

This is a list of the top 10 (how true that is I've no idea!)

I actually read that list earlier - I really don't understand most LOL Was hoping for a personal recommendation from someone here that has actually used 'video chat', they all make it so complicated compared to Skype

Signal is best if you can get all your contacts to use it.

Completely open source and encrypted.

It’s their encryption method all the other apps use.

Owned by a nonprofit foundation rather than a megacorp that just wants your data

On looking at their web site, can't actually see if they do 'video chat'?

Another option would be Telegram. It's a messaging service similar to Whatsapp which offers video chat function (never used the video function myself though).

Fairly sure it's quite secure (don't actually know who owns it though)

It's used for a lot of people to create groups for who they supply "additional" streaming services to there Firesticks.
