Focus MK4 Recurring leaky tyre valves

Featured Replies

Hey guys, hope someone can help me.

I've had the car (MK4 Focus 2019 1.0L 125ps Ecoboost automatic) coming up 11 months now and when I first got the car I noticed I had a couple tyres seemingly going flat so I got them checked out and turned out 2 of them had leaky valves so I got them fixed.

Fast forward maybe 5 months and again same issues 3 leaky valves this time.

And here we are again, present day with 2 more leaky valves.

Can anyone explain to me what on earth is going on? Is it something I'm doing? A common issue with ford valves and how do I actually prevent this because it's costing me £20 per tyre every single time. Any advice would be great because it's just something that absolutely grates on me.

Thanks guys!

When you’ve diagnosed leaky valves where are the valves actually leaking?

If it’s coming out of the core of the valve then you’ve just been unlucky or parts are poor quality etc

Otherwise if your leak is coming from where the rubber valve seats to the wheel rim you might have corrosion or uneven surface for the valve hole that’s stopping the rubber sealing properly to the rim. Though if you’re having valves replaced for leaking they should be checking that……

I have not checked the valve personally but I found out I was having issues with the valves when I took it to garage for a slow puncture. So on this point I'm not actually sure where it's actually leaking.

Thank you for this information on corrosion/uneven surface. If this is the case what would the fix be?

Worst case would be stripping the tyre and valve off the wheel and having the area rubbed down repainted etc but it’s possible tyre places have a ream or similar hand tool to skim the surface and clean it up that way

Is it expensive for somewhere to do? It's my first car and have only been driving 11months so I've no clue how to do it or I would possibly do it myself lol

If this isn't the case then what are other possible reasons for this to keep happening? I look after my car and never curb it(touch wood) so would like to know all potentials before taking it to someone.

Thanks for your help

First I’d say you need to have it confirmed where the leak is - just to confirm it’s not a slow puncture or air leaking through the rim etc

If you’re just handing the valve seat cleaned up I’d think it would cost similar to having a puncture fixed.

Maybe get some advice on a recommended local tyre place to use and see what they think about the issue and costs to sort it out
