DashCam footage reported to police...

Featured Replies

A few weeks back, I was on the M2 (Motorway) going uphill in lane 2. I was overtaking slower moving traffic in lane 1. I noticed a van in lane 3 tailgating the guy beside me and getting impatient. He them moved to behind me, and started tailgating me. He then caught a gap in lane 1, swerved into it, and to avoid hitting the now car in front of him, swerved out right in front of me, causing a vortex that strong it activated the 'lock' mechanism on my dashcam, protecting the video. I don't find anything inherently wrong with 'undertaking', but the way this was done, was simply dangerous.

Anyway, just got a call from the police to say they had now spoken to the driver, who was shocked that he'd been caught on video, and was very apologetic! That's all I wanted, him spoken to, and for the police to point out to him, that a second later, he would have caused a motorway pile up.

I have the cheapest NextBase dashcam they sell, all good!

Very commendable Stephen, I hate drivers like that.

Was the driver in lane 3 actually overtaking you or just sitting there?

Nope, he was overtaking, so in the correct lane...

I agree with everything you did, and most of what you said, apart from this :

I don't find anything inherently wrong with 'undertaking',

I very much do have a problem with "undertaking" and it should only be undertaken (pun intended) in exceptional circumstances, and when it is it should be done with extreme caution.
A classic piece of unnecessary "undertaking" is someone going past you on the inside (possibly even speeding whilst doing so) only to turn off at the next junction literally a few hundred yards distant. Totally pointless : a risk for no reward.

In UK for motorways is it not covered by Rule 268?:
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/motorways-253-to-273

It's not exactly law but if it went to Court or otherwise would likely have a big effect?

I have used uploaded dashcam footage 3 times and in 2 cases, the driver was sanctioned.

In the other I had a call and was told that the incident didn't quite meet the legal definition but would be logged against the registration plate so when the driver did something else silly, he couldn't use the "Never had any incidents before" excuse.
