Focus MK2 bonnet barrel lock change

Featured Replies

I had the dreaded bonnet release failure on my MK2 focus tdci estate today.

I managed to get the bonnet open after hours of messing about with a long screwdriver, but I broke the plastic collar where the rubber seal attaches.

Anyway I've bought a used original ford release mechanism to replace it, but it doesn't have the barrel lock. I want to use my lock anyway, so that doesn't matter. I also bought the aftermarket upgraded white plastic shaft, without the insanely stupid anti tamper feature.

Can anyone tell me the best method for removing the pins that are holding the barrel lock in place?

Thanks

You just need to knock them out with a small Drift with the Key in the Lock.

Hi

Many people (on other threads)have said they just continued to use a screwdriver to open the bonnet for years. Will the car pass its MOT if this is how you open the bonnet?

I can only give my opinion to answer your question, but it should pass it's MOT because with the screwdriver bonnet opening method, you can now guarantee the bonnet can be opened. With the stupid lock mechanism, opening the bonnet relied on pure luck.

I fitted the replacement ford bonnet mechanism and the aftermarket plastic shaft upgrade. With the bonnet open, I tested it by turning the key while watching the latch open and done this many many times to be sure. I then closed the bonnet and guess what.....It wouldn't open again using the key. To make matters worse, because it was now fitted with the aftermarket longer plastic shaft, there was no way to open it.

I had to get under the car and reach up to the bonnet latch with a small spanner and struggle to undo the bolts that attach the bonnet latch mechanism to the slam panel. This took hours and a lot of pain. Almost a year later I still have a scar on my forearm from doing this job.

All I can say is that if anyone tells me I can't have the bonnet needing a screwdriver to open it and I must fit a stupid ford release mechanism, I will have to try and remain calm!
