Problems with loud secondary small turbo area fan

Featured Replies

Hi All!

Hope you are all well

I apologise in advance im not very car savvy, I know the bare basics and thats about it lol.

I was directed here by a family member after discussing the ongoing battle of issues im currently facing with my focus. Ill start with a bit of context, the car is a 2014 plate focus 1 ltr Ecoboost, Ive owned the car for just over 3 years and its been perfect apart from the odd part trouble free replacement here and there however lately its gave me nothing but headache.

The problems all seemed to start when I noticed a fan would quite somewhat audibly but nothing too concerning come on with the startup of the car from cold, that you can hear from the interior of the car. I then noticed the car was slowly losing coolant every now and then to which the garage summarised a gasket had rotted away on the radiator and required to be replaced. Ever since the radiator has been replaced everytime i begin running the car between 5-10 minutes after startup ive been having the issue with the smaller turbo area fan coming on at a alarming volume which is so loud it sounds like a buzz saw. Ive been back to the garage and they cannot find any faults with it on the computer. The strange part is they go off As soon as I turn the car off.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and delt with it previously?

Thanks all

What fan, the car heater fan, the radiator fan, or something else ?

A gasket failure is not unusual but I can't understand what gasket there would be on the radiator.

Now to be honest I confused. The radiator was replaced because of a gasket problem ? What "smaller turbo fan" are you referring to ? Please explain.

Hi,

Are you sure it's the small fan coming on, not the radiator fan?  The small one is just for the intercooler, but that shouldn't come on unless the intake air temperature is very high.

You'll probably find the radiator/intercooler setup is touching the bodywork somewhere since they were all removed so it's increasing the sound.  However, if it is the IC fan then that one shouldn't be on anyway.  Intake air temperature should be checked over a drive using diagnostics.
