Oil leak - Any ideas?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

First post, so be kind :-). I've discovered an oil leak from under my car yesterday, it's seems to have dumped quite a lot of oil. Today I noticed a small hole in the metal casing of what I think is the gearbox (Correct me if I'm wrong) where the oil is leaking out of. Does anyone know if this can be sealed up at home or is it going to be a more expensive garage job? I don't have any warning lights at the moment and all seems ok driving wise, but like I say it's has dumped a lot of oil even though when I checked the dipstick it was still relatively full.

Thanks in advance guys,

Can we see a wider picture?  Difficult to see exactly where that is.

It does look like gearbox oil rather than engine oil though.

Apologies I have to trim it down due to image data size allowed. This might be better, it's basically at the front

Thanks, I think that's just the normal rainwater drainage hole on the gearbox, where it butts up against the engine.

That means it's probably the gearbox input shaft seal that has failed.  The gearbox will have to be removed if that is what's happened.
