Ford S-Max (2015) - Rear Axle Problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2015 Ford S-Max AWD which has developed an annoying problem.

It runs from cold perfectly, no noises.... It will run all day !

BUT if you stop for about 10mins... and drive again, I'm getting a mechanical grinding sound from the rear passenger side. While grinding, there is definitely some rear braking going on as the car pulls back slightly.

The grinding goes after a few seconds and the car will run fine all day... unless you stop again for say 10mins....

If you park up overnight, it's fine in the morning !

Any light shed on this as to where I need to be looking first would be appreciated !

Many thanks

Adrian

That is the big clue to me?
Drive it for enough time to allow the problem to be initiated, jack up each side in turn and locate the wheel that is the problem.
Check handbrake mechanism is released correctly (cable and spring on the caliper) or caliper binding etc.
It is strange that the 10 min stop sets it off but it could be a thermal problem i.e. there's heat and when you stop, it can't escape and causes the issue?
Best guess as ever!
