Escort MK4 XR3i Steering issue

Featured Replies

HI bought a 1987 Escort XR3i,

but the steering is really heavy & stiff, drove it round the car park at home,

I tried to turn it round to park facing the other direction but it was so difficult to turn

Has anyone any ideas what may be causing  it please

FWD Escorts and Orions were blooming awful for heavy steering

The variable ratio MK4 rack was worse than the Mk3 I thought

I had an Orion 16i Ghia and a MK3 Capri 20.S (on 205s) at the time and the Capri was a lot lighter

You may be able to chop up the column and fit an electric motor form , say, a Corsa one

You may also be able to backward engineer the MKV Escort PAS system (try and find an early donor with a CVH engine fitted

But all options will include cutting and welding and lots of research

I owned the same car, as well as a 1990 RS Turbo. From memory, neither presented an overly stiff steering effort. Before cutting & welding a power steering upgrade, I would get it checked by a garage that the original is functioning as specified from factory...

Check the tyre pressures are correct!
