Oil everywhere - drivers side - s-max 2011

Scrap that. Looks like there is no access to the fuel pump under the seats. Time to get it to a garage!

I had another play around this evening, and decided to chuck 10L of petrol into the tank, and it started and even went for a test drive! My guess is that even though it was reporting quatre tank of fuel, I was parked on a steep driveway, so I guess it wasn't enough fuel to reach the pump.

Anyway, back to square one, misfire on cylinder 4. However it seems like cylinder 4 isn't even firing. I removed the coil pack connector and engine sound didn't change. tried quickly with cylinders 1, 2 and 3 and all make a noticeable difference to engine noise. So I swapped coil packs and the fault stayed at cylinder 4. It's had new spark plugs.

I guess the next step is a compression test on cylinder 4?

Still getting a small amount of oil spraying from the timing sensor seal without pushing the engine, so I guess the engine is still being pressurised. If it's not the crankcase breather, then piston ring?

Yes.  Could also be headgasket or cracked head.

Hi, me again! So, compression test on all 4 cylinders:

Cylinder 1 = 170

Cylinder 2 = 172

Cylinder 3 = 174

Cylinder 4 = 0

😄

I guess something catastrophic has happened for it to be 0 psi?!

Yeah, that's not just a blown headgasket or a small crack.  Even with a dodgy valve I'd expect some compression.  This probably means the piston is broken.

Might be worth getting an endoscope for your phone to look through the spark plug hole for that cylinder.

Hi Tom, thanks for your help with this issue, much appreciated throughout. Unfortunately it was a "melted piston and blown head gasket" so the car has now gone to the big scrap heap in the sky. Hopefully this whole thread will help someone else with similar issues.

Do a compression test first! £15 for the testing kit and took less than half hour.
