Clanking noise when going over speed bumps or holes in road

Featured Replies

Hello I am new to this community but reaching out as hoping for some expert advice. I have a well looked after low mileage Ford Fiesta 2010. Its my pride and Joy. Its always been well maintained and serviced. Last week I notice a strange noise when going over the MANY speed bumps in my village (and pot-holes). Its coming from front end drivers side and I am assuming its around the wheel area/arch/axel etc do to when I hear it. It can be heard when just driving. I took it in for a full service and mentioned it to the garage, picked it up today and they said 'we done full service and cant 'see' anything'. The noise is still there as I drove home!! Sure they haven't even checked.

If I has to describe the noise it sounds like if you banged an empty aluminium water bottle. I can here it inside the car and its concerning me!!

Any ideas? Advice or clue would be appreciated.

It's probably from driving into many pot holes😄

Weak/broken spring

Loose ball joint

Worn shock absorber

Seized/worn drop link

Would that be something you cant see just from the outside and I would need them to strip the area down to find? YES too many potholes and speed bumps where we live Thanks for replying

Any underbody heat shields in that area?

If it's a hollow sound (banging a water bottle) I'd also check the exhaust to see if any of the mounts have broken away.

Hi Sam, welcome to the forum.  I've got to say that if I was a paying customer like you are, I'd ask them to take you for a ride in it so you could point the issue out when it clinks.  It's not like you're trying to blag some info for free.  I would be happy to identify the problem and quote for the work to be done if I was them, so reckon they'd be willing.
