Ford Focus 1.5 ecoblue camshaft chain alredy changed

Featured Replies

I bought my Ford Focus 2019 15 ecoblue 88kw used with around 145k km. It has been great with just regular maintenance. At the time I was not aware that these engines were prone to issues with their camshaft chains being too small. I heard that there is an upgrade kit that fixes that but is expensive.

I am wondering how can i check if the chain has been changed in the past by the previous owner?  Thanks in advance.

To check what's under the camshaft cover, you need to remove the engine decorative cover ( I assume it's ZTDA engine) and check the p/n on the camshaft cower center (on the RH side is the FoMoCo PSA logo ) and:

If number on the camshaft cover is 98 305 804 80 this Ecoblue has 8 mm camshaft chain so you're on the safe side.

If number is 98 126 472 80 than you need to replace your timing chain since this is 7mm chain (there's a kit available with new chain, camshafts, cover and seals...approx 800-900 GBP for parts) ASAP.

If you wish to replace the chain only, I would say you do this experiment on your own risk.

Here's the link, check photos to understand what  I'm explaining:

Hi Ned ,I've got a 2020 1.5 ecoblue and I've just checked the numbers on my cam cover and mine has 90 305 804 80 does this mean it's been upgraded or was it built with it ,I've had the car for 6 months and there's no paperwork to back it up .

What's the mileage (or km) on your car odometer?

1.5EcoBlue with 7mm chain would last between 60-80 k miles, with first indications of the fault would be unrelated and strange fault codes, out of the blue. When was the problem sorted I do not know, most likely late 2022 or early 2023. So most likely your Focus had a repair with 8 mm chain set. I would say on time, since speaking to few garages camshaft timing kit with 8mm chain is in short supply, or overwhelming demand considering how many brands beside Ford have been contaminated with 7mm camshaft chain (PSA, DS, Vaux/Opel, even Toyota..).

My mileage is 75341 , so would you say that some where along the way that mine has been upgraded and I'm thinking if the chain has been done then the belt must have been changed ? I don't have any paperwork  to back this up but it definitely has the number for the 8mm chain on the cover

That's the wrong part. You need the number from the metal cover, not the plastic one.

How do I reach it without removing the plastic cover?

Might be able to see it with a small mirror. Otherwise you have to remove the plastic cover.

I used my phone to take a picture
