Ford fiesta active edition 2020 Steering problems

Featured Replies

Hi everyone I have been experiencing stiffness and heavy steering on straight roads I have had a diagnostic and it has come back with nothing if anyone has the same or knows this issue please let me no thanks

Not sure I quite understand the fault.  Why would you be steering on a straight road?

The power assistance is variable, so it will be heavier at speed on a motorway for example, but shouldn't be stiff.

I guess the lane guidance system could be fighting you if fitted?

If it's none of those things then make sure the car battery is well charged.  Recharge from the mains over night if possible.

Fitted to all Mk 8s so a possibility. Easy to switch off with the button on the end of the indicator stalk.

Press the button on the turn signal stalk.

Most cars need a little more steering effort to deviate from the "straight ahead" of course.

Probably a bit more background needed here, eg:

Has the issue always been present or just started? Previous car? Relatively new driver? etc

There seem to have been a number of issues raised with Mk 8/8.5 Fiesta steering "feel" and in many cases it appears to come down to unfamiliarity with the responsive and at times, fairly weighty, steering.

Battery voltage does seem to throw up all sorts of weirdness (in addition to the usual stop/start going awol) so worth checking.

For example when on a country road and there is slight turns in the road the wheel is heavier and almost sticks? When it’s straight if that makes any sense?
yeah I don’t have the lane system on

I take you to mean when you have been driving with the wheel in the straight ahead position for some distance, and then make a slight change of direction requiring a small turn of the wheel?

If that's the case, sounds pretty normal as already mentioned. Another factor could be that Ford decided to equip the Active with some pretty wide and low profile tyres** which can seem to require greater effort on initial steering input, particularly if you're used to something else.

You don't say it you have had the car long, if it has always behaved in this way, or if it has just started to do so?

**Are the tyre pressures correct, btw?

Yes that’s exactly what I mean!
and yes everything been checked tyre pressure had a diagnostic and everything come back fine but this never used to happen! And I’ve had the car 1 and a half years

I've experienced what (I think) is the feeling you mention with my Fiestas, but as you feel it's different to when you first had the car, something must have changed. Only other points I can think of off the top of my head is tyres getting low on tread and/or wheel alignment.
