CV Axle Seal replacement - Focus 09

Featured Replies

Hi all, yet again.

A well needed to do of mine is replacing the CV Axle seal, when under the car I noticed a substantial amount of what I assume to be old gearbox oil on the underside of the transmission. The culprit looking very similar to this:   - While I am no mechanic I am pretty sure pictured is the CV Axle seal, but my seal leak is on the drivers side of the transmission which has failed and will thus need replacing. I believe this is called the driveshaft oil seal. I was planning on draining and filling the transmission but thought there would be no point in filling it up with nice new transmission oil for it just to pi** out.

Driveshaft Oil Seal Replacement:

-Apply Handbrake / Jack car up

- Remove Drivers side wheel

- Remove wheel arch (Torx30?)

- Unbolt the Prod (17mm Nut)

- Remove Pinch Bolt for Lock and Ball Joint (Torx50 & 15mm Bolt)

- Prise down / Lever off bottom ball joint, remove from the hub

- Remove Track Rod

- Pry out from Gearbox (Mind for Oil)

- Pull back from the Hub and completely remove it from Gearbox

- Pry out Driveshaft Oil Seal

- Clean around Seal and Gear Box Oil

-Refit Drive Shaft Oil Seal - Opening of O goes towards the inside of the Gearbox - Tap a Socket on to ensure is seated flat in the Gearbox

- Refit the Drive Shaft into the Gearbox (Ensure its fully in!) - Mind bottom ball joint when trying to push back in - Turn Drive Shaft as pushing in so as the splines line up. - If anything shiny remains keep pushing in until properly seated.

-Use pry bar to lever Ball Joint (15mm & Torx50) back in place

- Reconnect the Prod (17mm)

- Tighten all to spec (35/45Nm?)

- Crack open Transmission Fill Plug but do Not Remove (8mm Hex)

- Crack open Transmission Drain Plug and drain Transmission (8mm Hex)

- Remove Transmission Fill Plug & Let Drain

- Refit Transmission Oil Drain Plug

- Fill with 2.3L of Gearbox Oil

- Refit the Transmission Oil Fill Plug

Job Done! .......I hope
