Engine temp explanation

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

im not a car orientated person and this is my first car.

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what this is? I think it’s the engine temperature but I do not know how to tell what is good or bad? Sometimes it’s 3 bars sometimes 4. I am not 100% sure if it has even gone to 2 bars (I can’t remember off the top of my head)

please explain this concept to me as though I am stupid, because realistically I am when it comes to cars.

I would just like to add that i have also played around with the system settings mainly to just see what my car does.

this has shown on my screen in the settings. What does this also mean? Is this good or bad? I mainly just get in the car and go unless it’s freezing and I want to warm up a bit.

Bad, very bad.

Hi,

You will notice in the central area of the scale there are brackets.

If the bars are outside of and lower than the brackets then the engine is cold

If the bars are outside of and higher than the brackets then the engine is starting to overheat

If the bars are anywhere within the brackets, this is totally normal

The ECO tip is just warning that doing short journeys a cold engine is not good practice as it uses more fuel.

Just a bit of advice with that engine, ensure you have the oil changed AT LEAST every 12 months, using the correct oil and bear in mind that the timing and oil pump belts will need changing before you reach the car's 10th anniversary

Hi Dave, thank you for explaining the first image about being inside the brackets.

I am still unsure of what you mean in regard to the eco tip. Sorry that I don’t understand haha I am no good with cars.

i use my car mainly for social and commuting purposes and my daily commute to work is minimum of 20 mins. Usually longer on a 9-5 due to traffic.

Just ignore the ECO Tip👍

Very good advice. 👍

Now what about the "my Stop/Start system isn't working the way I think it should", question ? 🤣

I do have stop start however I cannot tell if it actually does anything , I don’t have it turned off.

is it good or bad for your engine?

I don't like Stop Start, I have it deactivated on my BMW

It takes a lot more effort on the belts/chain to get the top end of the engine turning as it does to keep it turning

Plus the extra wear on the starter motor and battery

That simply means it's not working 🎉
