Older cars/ high mileage engine

Evening guys. Please can I ask is there any point in putting a thicker oil in older cars with high mileage engines? Maybe make them run a little quieter? Say instead of 5w30 use 10w40 .thanks

    That is true, I knew someone who was selling a Hillman Imp that had a noisy Engine and he put a small handful of sawdust in the Oil Filler Hole just before selling and it quieted it down lovely.
