Focus mk3 service engine now troubleshooting

Featured Replies

Hi,

any tips for Ford Focus 2015 1.0 125hp with Service Engine Now alarms every now and then after 80-100ml drive? This usually happens when driving 70mph or similiar speeds and when warning is shown, car goes into a limp mode. Engine restart clears error. Oil pump, vacuum pump and map sensor replaced after issues started. Local auth ford dealer failed to load full list of error codes, timeout or incomplete results or no persistent fault codes.

Any tips for troubleshooting to catch the actual problem?

When were the wet belts replaced ? Did this problem start before or after the belts were changed ?

The belts were replaced last year, before I got the car.

What reliable evidence is there that it was done?

Have the codes been read whilst in limp mode i.e. with the fault actually present?

No other evidence than stamps on service manual 😐

I've yet to read the codes while service engine is lit, the BT obd reader that I have used, may not be the best, and I've ordered a OBDlink for forscan to capture the code. No recorded codes read with the cheap reader.

I hv 2018 focus, exactly same problem. Turn off engine and it clears from limp mode with check engine coming on. I’m getting turbo under boost fault as well.  Found slithers of metal filings in vacuum pump and oil. 41000 miles on clock.
worth changing vacuum ?  Anyone used Metzger ? Pumaspeed?  Ford ones are over £500 !  Oil changed only couple months ago.

thanks.

If there's metal in the oil, I wouldn't buy a brand new vac pump.  Try a used one first.  The problem could be far bigger than just a vac pump.

Can anyone recommend reliable used parts eg vacuum pump ?

Look at breakers yards on eBay.  Make sure you use one that offers warranty.  And check their eBay feedback to make sure most customers are happy with the service.

If you have a local breakers yard then see what the reviews are like for those, as parts might be a bit cheaper without the eBay business seller fees.

I have the 1.6 diesel hatch and the codes it gave me were injector number 4 was operating out of perameters. This is a common issue on the model to my understanding so i would reccomend getting or finding someone with a diag tool for fords and see what faults it gives you before going and replacing parts

Here's an output with Forcsan, after the "Service engine" is shown and limp mode is activated:

It's no surprise the Code: P0299 is somehow related to Turbo, as MAP and airfilter is already exchanged, based on this, anyone have any tips on how to continue troubleshooting?

This is a long running thread on the same code so may have some ideas:
https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/161577-smax-22-diesel-off-road-for-year-after-injector-seal-help/

As said above suggest doing as much diagnosis, live date reading and checking for air leaks, turbo boost operating vacuum pipework, control and vanes etc, etc before firing the parts cannon.
