2017 S-Max coolant leak - new engine?

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m new here but looking for advice/experience others may have faced.

i have a 2017 S-Max, petrol, 1.5 Eco Boost. There is evidence of coolant in a cylinder. Ford have said it’s a new engine as the head will be warped. £10k has been quoted!
I’ve had the car for 4.5 years, regularly serviced, it’s covered 73k miles.
i love the car, it’s perfect for my family (size etc), but is it really worth the cost of a new engine?!
has anyone else experienced this and can offer any advice?
I’ve logged a complaint with Ford but not holding out much hope!
thanks for reading

Hi,

This is a known issue with this engine unfortunately.  You can get a brand new Ford engine fitted by Pumaspeed for less than half of Fords quoted price.  But even at ~£4k it's not a cheap repair.  So whether it's worth it or not really depends on your current circumstances and whether you could buy anything else if you scrap this one.

Thanks for your reply.

I’ve found a local garage who can do it for £6500, new engine imported from Germany.

Owing to my requirements (MPV for 3 kids) there are not a lot of alternatives.
my concern with replacing the engine is whether it will spark off a chain of other ancillary parts failing as they have been stressed by the breakdown and repair. So I’m putting good money after bad.

most opinions have been to cut my losses and move on. But it’s a perfect vehicle for me and I can’t buy much for £6500.
I’m leaning towards a repair.

Your local garage can purchase the engine from Pumaspeed without fitting.  That might be quicker and cheaper than waiting for a German import.

Ancillaries shouldn't have been damaged in this type of engine failure.  It's another common issue on a different engine (wetbelts) that contaminates the oil which usually ends up damaging the turbo and vacuum pump on those.  I wouldn't expect any further problems with a new engine in this case.

Agree with your thoughts, there isn't any alternative if you want the outstanding features (to us) that S-MAX offers and, as you also say buying anything else will still be expensive plus will probably  be a compromise.
You are well down the depreciation curve so hopefully with the other advice on ancillaries you can make a decision.
We are in the same situation if a major breakdown occurs but I think we'd still opt for a repair (My ongoing joke - we were offered £50 trade in by Arnold Clark which rather made the decision to keep a no-brainer!)
Do let us (me) know what you decide and how it goes which we hope meets your needs.

Personally I'd get Pumaspeed to supply and fit the engine. If there are any problems or concerns with either the engine or the fitting then you have only one company to deal with. They will even collect your broken car from you.

Fitting:   Fully Fitted: £4151.50 (inc. VAT)

If you require your 1.5 EcoBoost engine to be fitted, no problem. Our fully trained and qualified technicians can install your brand new engine from start to finish here at Pumaspeed HQ in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. We can even arrange a fully insured collection of your vehicle from anywhere in mainland UK for a competitive price.
