Front Brake issue after cv joint replacement

Featured Replies

G'day all,

I posted on here a few months ago 5th Oct 2024, about a front right drive axle issue, which was replaced under 2nd hand car 3 month warranty.

I have the feeling that the vibration and throbbing from the faulty cv joint, felt under braking, through the steering wheel and throbbing, which was felt and heard through the front panels in the cab, has caused an effect on the brake disc and pads on that side. I have been feeling the effect when braking even though we had the drive shaft replaced.

Though the car drives beautifully and feels safe, it annoys me when braking. Should the front brake discs and pads be replaced even though they still have plenty of life in them?

Before I replace the disc and pads, to try and resolve the noise and vibration issue, which is only when braking, i would like to hear if anyone has an opinion on this.

One other thought on this is, did a faulty disc and pads cause the cv joint problem? My previous post about the drive shaft shows a photo of split boot and deposit of grease leak on the control arm.

If it's only when braking, IMHO unless something is seized/worn unevenly/can be checked by measurements (best way but you need the gear to check disc thickness and run out etc?) you may just have to change them.

Can't see drive shaft causing problems with brakes unless grease got onto the disc?
But ... I'd wait for multiple other opinions and decide for your self after that?

If it was my car, the first thing I would do is strip the front brakes and make sure everything has been assembled properly, including removing the discs and cleaning the contact surfaces on the discs & hubs (maybe some dirt has got between disc & hub causing runout on the disc).

By what you say, the cv boot split and let the grease out of the joint, causing it to wear out. I can't see how the brakes could cause that.

Thankyou for your replies Shearers and Alan GH. I should have been back here earlier, to check replies to my query. There's only 2mm above legal on front and rear discs, at recent service, so we'd best get them replaced asap. If new discs and pads fix the issue, I'll try to remember to get back on 'ere and post the result.

Cheers
