How often should oil be topped up

Featured Replies

Silly question but for me a month after having a full service I already need to fill the oil level up from low.

To me I feel it should last longer than that or am I wrong.

What engine ?

How many miles has it done  ?

Check for leaks, especially loose oil filter.

If it's leaking take it back and make them seal it and top the oil up

Never (in a perfect world).

Did you check the level immediately after the service?  They might not have put enough in at the time.

The dipsticks are also unreliable on some Ford engines.  Making the level appear lower than it is.

That’s something I didn’t do unfortunately

How many miles has it done since it was serviced.

The majority of Ford units use no oil, or very little.

With the veh on LEVEL ground leave standing overnight. Following morning remove dipstick, wipe clean and re dip and note that hopefully it is on full mark, if not top up, do not overfill. Before checking always remove dipstick and wipe clean first.

After say 200 miles carry out same process as above - that should give you accurate info as to if you are using any significant amount of oil.

Just under 1000 miles since service. Did the oil stick yesterday hence my post but will top up the oil and see what happens after.
