ABS and traction lights on but no codes?

Featured Replies

Hi tried the search but it seems to be broken? 2011 Focus 1.6 diesel, had to have new springs and front struts fitted for MOT, when driving home noticed average speed was 5 MPH and no I didn't drive home at 5 MPH!

Checked for fault codes and there were a few which I cleared so now I have no codes but have warning lights for ABS and traction control? skiddy car symbol, when I checked the codes there were ABS and road speed sensor, I have had the ABS sensors out and they were clean and undamaged, gave the connectors a good dose of electrical cleaner before I plugged them in when I'd finnished, haven't driven the car yet as my MOHO is blocking me in on the drive, I'm going to go for a drive tomorrow and see what happens, anything I should be looking for?

Don't use a generic code reader.

Use FORScan and you will get the Ford DTC.

The very probable cause is the front right ABS sensor has failed.

Or they broke the wires removing the suspension.

I'd take it back, they've caused it

Good plan I have FORscan from my Transit camper days, I spoke to the guy who did the struts and he ran through the job with me he did unplug the ABS sensors so not to strain the wires and I could tell they had been recently disturbed, he's a good guy I've worked with him for many years now and I do trust him. I'll go for a run up the road then put FORscan on and see what comes up, should there be a voltage at the sensor plug with the ignition on to check the wiring?

Thanks

You would need to use an oscilloscope to see the ABS signal or check it with FORScan.

Went for a drive and fault lights on dash cleared then while I was parking on my driveway they came back.

See attachment for what is on my FORscan now

Loads of faults but battery volts, an ABS sensor and CAN faults stand out?
How old is battery, fully charge test.and
Check that sensor and circuit, clear codes, see what sticks, is there live data from sensor?
Go from there?

Thanks for your reply, I don't understand the battery volts as the battery is good and engine was running so shouldn't be low volts?

I was going to check for 12volts at the sensor, check the sensor plug far corrosion etc. but when I disconnected it last time it looked clean and dry inside I wonder if the 12v will be absent or perhaps intermittent.

Looks like it's ***** down all day today so it won't be today!

I drove out yeterday and stopped when the ABS light went off, cleared the codes and reset the FORscan and codes were all clear, drove home and when parking on the drive the ABS and skiddy car came back on and when I checked FORscan the attached list of codes were there, wondering if there's a wire break that causes an intermittent volt drop in the ABS cable?

Can't explain the other codes though and all was clear for the MOT, thank goodness!

It's impossible to look at ABS sensor and determine if it is working.

OK so I managed to get the wheel off and check the voltage at the ABS sensor connection and it was spot on 12v tried waggling the lead and pulling gently on the plug staedy 12v at all times so that all loks good.

Checked the plug and socket while disconnected and absolutely spotless so I thing we can eliminate the sensor and wiring.

Next went back to FORscan and going through the list of fault codes they were all clear but historical from a previous event so cleared them and they all went away, disconnected FORscan reconnected and the codes all came back so next I started going through making resets of the systems, final one was reset the ECU which seems to have done the trick!

Only hope they don't come back next time I drive the car as hoping to pass it on to our grandson who needs another car to replace the moneypit he has just now!

I was a bit wary resetting the ECU but felt I had nothing to lose!

Many thanks all, hopefully this will be of help to others.

as written just above your post - you can't measure wheel speed sensor wiring and get a sensible result - its got an IPC chip in there to amplify an almost imperceptible hall signal from the reluctor and the sensor - you'd need to be an electronics guru and add power and fun in to the mix

what you ought to be able to do is get all four wheel speeds up on a diagnostic tool - and drive around and see if they all behave in a very similar manner and have a stable speed display - fully broken ones likely read nothing on said wheel - and or have vehicle speeds when its stationary.  Part broken wiring hopefully gives erratic readings on said wheel - try over nasty road surfaces as that tends to aggravate the wire break

Apologies for not closing this out, I thought I had but maybe didn't click post!

Anyway resetting the ECU was successful and not haad any more problems since, I wasn't happy doing this but it worked so another time it might not be so scary!

Thanks for all your suggestions
