Advice Needed: Focus ti-vct/Zetec or Ecoboost Engine

Featured Replies

Hi

I am looking to replace my Mk2 2011 Focus TDCI estate for a newer model, but I'm really confused about the newer engines.

Apparently, I need to go for a petrol engine as I mostly do short journeys, but I've also been advised to avoid all ecoboost models, which I believe leaves the 1.6 zetec or TI-VCT engines? I was hoping to get a model between 2012 and 2015, but there seems to be very few of these engines available.

Could anyone tell me if the zetec and Ti- vct engines are available in the mk 3 models, and if they are a better option to the ecoboost?

Many thanks

Hi,

Zetec is a trim level so best to ignore that to avoid further confusion.

All of the 1.6 Sigma engines are Ti-VCT in the Mk3.

There are 2 main power levels, 105bhp and 125bhp.

There was also an 85bhp version, but very rare and only fitted to the most basic trim level so unlikely to come across any of those.

Personally I'm not a fan of this engine at all.  Very slow, poor on fuel, expensive to tax.  They were at least reliable when new, but reliability fades with age.

I would recommend the 1.6 EcoBoost engine instead.  This engine does not have a wetbelt like the 1.0 EcoBoost.  There are some cooling system issues with them though, so not totally reliable.

1.6 TDCI is also fine doing shorter journeys in these.  I had both Mk2.5 & Mk3 with 1.6 TDCI engines.  Again, the reliability is fading with age though.

All will be due a cambelt by now if not already replaced.

As you already have a 2011 model, I'm not sure 2012-2015 is a financially worthwhile upgrade.
