2020 Focus ST Line Engine Replacement?!...

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

New here so I hope this is in the right place and I come with a problem I need help with!

I am in no way mechanically minded and I've been told I need to replace the engine in my Focus. It has a melted piston on the 1L eco boost engine (although I'm told it's chain driven and not the wet belt type).

Has anyone come across this before? Does anyone know where I can get a replacement engine? Can I replace the piston instead of the whole engine? Has anyone done this sort of job before and know anyone they could recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Melted piston is an interesting one.  Certainly not common.  There must have been a faulty injector on that cylinder so that needs checking before fitting to a new engine.

The chain engines aren't easy to find new.  Ford will charge you £7000 for one...without fitting!  TPUK have one for £5000.

You can buy refurbished ones for around £1500.  Or used for around £1000.  As this engine is generally quite reliable, used might be worth the risk.  (Unlike with the old wetbelt type).

Regarding repair, I think 1.0 EcoBoost is too much of a risk to replace just one piston.  That would be ok for a small non turbo engine.

If you would like another opinion on repair, I would recommend contacting Approved Engines to see what they think best in this case.

I have heard of it before, maybe something to do with Cylinder Deactivation along with an Injector fault.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I have spoken to Approved Engines and they said an injector fault but I have had someone check the injectors already and they have told me they are fine. They have quoted me £3k plus VAT for a new one. Any idea on where I can get a refurbished engine other than Approved?

There are some other websites offering refurbs from a quick online search, but I wouldn't know which can be trusted unfortunately.
