MK4 HUD retrofit

Featured Replies

Hi!

I have just finished retrofitting HUD into my focus. I know, it is kind of useless feature but that is not a point. HUD modules are not very expensive, maximum 200euro. So, quite tempting... If I had to say how it was, so, mechanical effort is huge. Big number of very specific keys, tools, etc is required. Difficult and hard manual work. What is the most difficult, is to cut precisely the dashboard. I have used some junked dashboard to create kind of stencils, with this the whole task is much easier.

There are number of other challenges on the way. If you are lucky and could find the OEM mount, than is not easy to put it in. I did other way, design replacement. It holds the HUD in place, it is stiff. Printing on 3D printer takes like 3-5 days but is a good replacement.  The 3D files are shared on https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6538143

Electrical job and programming is trivial.

Finally, all has been done, HUD works as it should. I will drop some hint here, if there will be someone interested.

Not that I will be trying this myself, but an interesting project nether the less. 👍 🎉

Only one small observation. you seem to have fitted it on the wrong side 🤣

Looks good, well done for doing this, do you have anymore info on the install like do you have to take out the Speedo to fit it in, and what did you use to cut the dash.

Hi!

That was big work. If you really want to repeat this, I will have to give many hints, on every step.

Basically, I did all without removing "speedo" bu this is not recommended. There is one mounting point, on a side of HUD, which is not possible to fix without speedo remove. I did some crazy "solution"  which I'm not proud of.

The dash was cut using a knife  which you can see on pictures, blades are kind of "high end" ones. I tried using some tools but the knife was the best. Patiently repeated cutting and  break away parts. This plastic is nice to cut.

Was the wiring harness already there or did you get it with the unit?

In HUD retrofitting, wiring is the smallest problem 😉

There was no harness, but you just need power, ground  which you can get from BCM, one wire to the button and CAN bus which is just an inch away, that is in IPC connector. In compare to other retrofitings e.g. BLIS this harness is trivial.

Is it necessary to remove the dashboard?

Not necessary, but it will help a lot. Also, there is one mount point for the hud, which can not be fixed without removing the dashboard. However, it is no critical. I tried to do some support which the whole hud is pressed to, used some adhesive and it stays stiff. As I said, not necessary but would help a lot!

Hi, I need to set up something on the BCM or other modules.

I have reviewed changes in my module before and after HUD was added. Here is a calculator for my changes. I'm not sure why I have changed APIM, the change in IPMA is for pre-colision warning.

Thanks.  Any ideas about the wire conection?

Do you have wiring diagram? The connection is very simple. The CAN line and ground you can take from IPC wires, power to fuse F10 of BCM. The last wire is the button signal.

Once you cut the dashboard, you will see kind of a support element. This element is screwed on left and right sides to the dashboard. You need to unscrew the support and remove it. The screws are very important for HUD, since this is the place where my frame or genuine frame are mounted.

The dash board has nothing ready for HUD, the dash is flat and needs all holes drilled and carved. That's why I have prepared the stencil elements to do precise cuts. The precise cuts are crucial for quality HUD mounting. Even 1mm shift can result in poor result.

Ok thanks for that the holes I was asking you about are where you have fitted the hud in the photo 2 on left 3 on front with bolt ever side and 2 on right of hud there are oval shape holes that I assume there for the hud cover for the clips to go into where they already there when you cut away the panel or did you make them yourself I’ve circled them in photo I’ve sent thanks

Sorry also forgot to ask did you design the mount yourself as that’s impressive and would you have specs for it thanks
