Possible Ford Focus 1.6 2006 alternator damage

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have ford focus mk2 1.6 petrol. I replaced the105A alternator back in dec 2024 with a Starline alternator as the battery light kept coming on and this solved the issue.
My wife is learning to drive and readlined the engine yesterday which I think has damaged the Starline  alternator (bad smell and whining sound from alternator).

As I said it was a 105A alternator and I've found a Denso alternator on euro carparts rated at 120a. Would this be ok to install please?

Thank you.

Sean.

Provided that it uses the same electrical connectors then it will be fine.

The charging system on a 2006 model is not as complex as modern vehicles.

Ah great.

Thanks for confirming.

I've never heard of breaking an alternator by redlining.  Should be able to bounce it off the limiter without any damage at all.  Sure it's not clutch smell if she was riding the clutch at the same time?

I thought that initially at 1st also as she was riding the clutch a number of times trying to find the biting point in heavy traffic.

After the car cooled down I had a sniff around the engine bay and the smell and a whining sound (when the engine is running) seemed to be coming from the alternator. No battery warning light on the dash either.

All sorted now. It was the alternator. I replaced it and the whine has gone. Was still under warranty to euro car parts replaced it for free.

For future reference, You can check the alternator status using the car's built in diagnostics. If you put the key in thr ignition but don't turn it yet, hold the reset button on the indicator stalk for a few seconds, then turn the ignition to the setting so the lights and electrics turn on (do not turn the engine on yet), keeping the reset button pressed in, you can let go of the reset button and TEST will show on the dashboard.

That will bring up diagnostic menu on the car. Then just use the indicator to flip through the options.

BATTERY: With the engine OFF, you should see a reading between 12.0V and 12.6V. This is your standing battery voltage.

The Charging Test: Now, start the engine. The display will remain in the diagnostic menu.

The Reading: Cycle through until you find the voltage again. A healthy alternator should show a reading between 13.5V and 14.8V while the engine is running.
