2009 Ford Focus 1.8 Petrol randomly goes into limp mode

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 2009 Ford Focus (1.8L petrol), and I've run into an issue where the car randomly goes into limp mode and the check engine light comes on. After restarting the car a few times, it may go back to normal and run fine for a while – until the issue comes back again.

I checked the fault codes, and they pointed to the throttle body. I went ahead and replaced the throttle body, but unfortunately that didn’t fix the issue. Now I’m wondering what else could be causing this. Has anyone experienced something similar or have any idea what I should look into next?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Possible common Instrument cluster fault.

What did you use to read the DTCs?

launch and bosch fault code readers in use.

What fault codes are you getting?

Lots of "U" codes points to instrument cluster issues.

If you read with FORScan you would find lots more

I would contact @rd457 on here, he does a repair service, and have the cluster re-soldered before you look for any other issues.

Throttle pedal signal goes through the cluster first on MK2 Focus by the way😉

OP appears to be non-UK so maybe not, but I agree cracked solder joints in the instrument cluster are the most likely culprits.

Yep, I'm from Finland, but I wonder if I can find a repairman here too.

Yeah this is most likely the solder joints on the instrument cluster. If the cluster is fine then it's something that shares the same 5v circuit that's causing the voltage to drop.

I had a similar error codes and my solder joints were fine. The problem in my case was a faulty EGR valve which was causing the the voltage drop to throw all those other errors. However, I was also getting the P400 error for the EGR valve.

If you've got a multi-meter, I would check the voltage on everything that shares that circuit, but I'm pretty certain in your case it's the solder joints.

Hi,

The gauge was repaired and the fault codes went away. The car worked for a day but went into limp mode again. Now only the fault code p2110-63 comes up. A new accelerator pedal sensor was tried but the fault was not there. The gauge was sent back to service but I received a message from the servicer that they could not find a fault with the gauge. What next? Is there a fault in the ECU?

Throttle runs through the cluster.

My money is on the cluster is having the beginnings of solder breakdown.

Send your cluster away to be resoldered.

If you are doing it yourself DO NOT reflow, remove and replace the solder

Your car is going into limp mode because the PCM is detecting a discrepancy between the throttle position sensor and your electronic throttle body. If you've tried replacing the throttle position sensor, then it's most likely your throttle body, specifically, the sensor inside that controls the plate position.  As I mentioned in my previous post, all this stuff shares the same 5V circuit. If there's an issue with any of the sensors, it will cause a dip in the 5V, which will throw these types of errors.
