Looking at changing my turbo on my ford focus mk3 2012 1.0 eco boost petrol would like a bigger turbo on it what do you guys recommend will a 1.6 petrol turbo fit also be changing my cold air intake at the same time some like a big KN filter with new pipes and a heat shield



As mentioned elsewhere, 

Might be helpful to mention what (if anything) you've done so far, given that a simple remap from the likes of Superchips will give 163bhp without any hardware changes for £225 at present.

Only thing I have done the last few weeks is full oil change new filters new spark plugs new solenoid and new Vacuum Pump Valve Replacement Brake as it was losing power going up hill this year it has had wet belts done new water pump there is nothing wrong with the car just used to 2.0 ltr cars so it doesn't feel as quick just want a bit more power really

A 1.6 ECOboost turbocharger will not work. It does not physically fit at all and the wastegate actuation is reversed (boost pressure, normally closed actuation on the 1.6 ECOboost VS vacuum, normally open actuation on the 1.0 ECOboost).

There are no turbochargers of different engine types / other vehicles that physically fit to the 1.0 ECOboost. The only way is a hybrid turbocharger. These are available from suppliers like Pumaspeed and Collins Performance and others. Depending on the exact specifications and internals prices start at approximately 550 GBP up to approximately 1100 GBP.

A larger turbocharger itself does not bring much without other modifications. The engine management will simply limit the boost pressure.

To have the full potential of a hybrid turbocharger you also need a larger intercooler, Turbosmart recirculation or dump valve and most important a custom remap.

All these modifications will probably cost more than the value of the car.

JW1982 Cheers mate some good advice like I said nothing wrong with the car just want a bit more power as I am used to 2ltr cars only got this as not travelling far now for work I like the focus just want a bit more power would a stage 1 be of any use 

Which version do you have?

100 HP version with the 5-Speed IB5 transmission or the 125 HP version with the 6-Speed B6 transmission?

That is a good start.

Compared to the 100 HP version the 125 HP version has different material valves, a different turbocharger, and most important a transmission that is actually capable to handle high power/torque figures.

Note that the 125 HP version of the 1.0 ECOboost usually outputs more power than the official figures specified by Ford. On RON 98 fuel figures between 135 HP and 140 HP are not uncommon.

Modifications like a semi-open RS air filter housing, K&N air filter, Turbosmart recirculation valve and a decent remap will easily get it to approximately 160 to 165 HP.

I owned a 125 HP 1.0 ECOboost Focus MK3 for over 8 Years.

To be honest even standard it outperformed the naturally aspirated 2.0 Duratec Focus MK2/MK2.5 easily. It only had to be revved properly.


Sometimes I still miss the little 1.0 ECOboost. It actually was more fun to drive than the 1.6 ECOboost (MP200) and 1.5 ECOboost Kuga I drive now.

@JW1982just looking at the open air filter housing now on eBay would a simple cone filter be of any use and how big should I go with the filter

All three where pretty quick especially the Peugeot it's probably me but just miss a little power when you out the foot down

@JW1982 need a better version of one of those in the pic put a new one on 5 weeks ago and it's pulled out again where best to get one that will last longer cheers

Personally, I am not a fan of cold air intakes. 

Many cold air intakes actually result in a loss of performance instead of an increase in performance due to the lack of decent heat shields. 

Through the Years I have had very good experiences with a K&N E-9289 replacement filter in combination with a semi open Focus MK3.5 RS air filter lid. The K&N E-9289 replacement filter is the same filter that is included in the K&N 57S-4000 kit. Compared to the normal K&N E-2993 replacement filter this filter has a larger filtration surface (a larger amount of lamellas creates a larger filtration surface). Another advantage of this filter is the removable end cap. The filter can both be used with or without the end cap. Removal of the end cap transforms the air filter into a semi open air filter.

I used to have the K&N replacement filter and RS air filter housing lid on my previous Focus MK3  1.0 ECOboost for a few Years. Now I have the K&N replacement filter and RS air filter housing lid on my Kuga MK2.5  1.5 ECOboost.

Back in the days I bought a brand new MK3.5 RS air filter housing but these days aftermarket lids with a similar (or even identical) design can also be found.


Regarding the vacuum pump check valve, I do not have good experiences with the cheap aftermarket replacements. These often fail prematurely. As an alternative you can remove the rubber diaphragm and install an inline check valve.

These can be found in various sizes and have a spring loaded ball which is much more durable than the rubber diaphragm.
