1.0 - 1.5/2.0/2.3 swap

Featured Replies

Now I know it might seem crazy buuuut what are the possibilities of swapping a 1.0 to one of the more powerful engines from the MK4's.

Is this possible? Obviously would need gearbox swap as well and wiring loom. What else could be needed?

Assume it will need Forscan.

Anyone done this?

I know it might be cheaper to just buy a ST buuuuuut that's no fun 😂

What can I say, I like a challenge? 😂

Well, we tend to say anything is possible, if you throw enough time and money at it.

I don't know of anyone having done this, but you will need to also look at suspension and brake upgrades, particularly for the 2.3. This might be of interest:

Yea I saw this engine! Actually prompted me to think about this swap, and aye I agree with the breaks and suspension for safety and comfort but I'm more thinking at the moment parts that will absolutely allow the engine to run with no electrical and mechanical issues.

It would be much cheaper and easier to change your car for one with the engine you want!

Also, don't forget insurance companies frown on modified cars!

Who is this Dan?

@DAN@ADRIAN FLUX this is the Dan.

In all honesty I think you're starting with the wrong car.  Would be better off starting with a 1.5 EcoBoost or 2.0 TDCI and increasing the power on that instead.  How much would it cost to sell your 1.0 and buy a 180bhp 1.5 EcoBoost instead?

We all think that but Max doesn't seem bothered about the money!😀

Simply buying an ST could be a bit boring.  But buying a 1.5 to modify seemed like a middle ground, still allowing the fun of a few major mods, especially if he buys one pre-2019 which will come with IRS and bigger brakes than the 1.0, so those don't need to be sourced.  (Swapping rear beams is boring!)

I was having a discussion on this sort of topic with an old friend the other day. The theme was:

a) Is there much point in having a faster car nowadays, given the roads are awash with potholes, other hazards, and "safety" cameras?

b) Did we actually get more enjoyment in cars which you needed to really drive, rather than just press the pedal. Not as fast, obviously, but often felt that way, and arguably more fun.

I'm definitely not the right person to comment on fun.

In all seriousness, I've never understood the fun in driving fast, even less so 'feeling the road' or having to wrestle with the controls.  I basically want to arrive quickly without actually feeling anything.  So I'd rather hold speed through the corners than keep slowing down and speeding up for example.  For that reason, I actually found the GTi-6 to be a bit boring.  Apparently all the fun was meant to be in revving it out and frequent gearchanging...

I did get some fun out of the ST150.  That was fun at slower speeds on the backroads like a go kart.  I don't think more BHP = more fun personally.  Usually just a willy waving contest.  And I couldn't care for those either, I'm not competitive at all.

However, both the GTi-6 & the ST150 did have 'something' over the standard models which I'd owned beforehand.  Can't quite put my finger on it but all the little touches add to the overall experience.  So I would generally prefer an ST or a GTI, but for the overall package, not the increase in BHP.  (Which completely goes against the premise of this thread lol...)

Hi.

If you need any help with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.
