New car

Featured Replies

Hi all hoping for a bit of advice, I'm looking at a 23 plate ford focus st line 1.0 petrol as a replacement for my 17 astra sri, what should I look out for, IV read some issues with the wet belt but think it's back to a chain in the newer models but oil pump still uses a wet belt is that something I should be worried about, also the car is a cat s IV bought cat cars before and it doesn't really scare me to much, more engines that worries me, if anyone had any thoughts/advice I'm all ears

Cheers

What power is it? The 100ps retained the wet cam belt.

Edit: for the benefit of any future searchers - forget that, it refers to the Fiesta!

i find if you service regularly (every10k) and use top quality oil you will be fine

Mea culpa! I'm so used to seeing this one about Fiestas!

The Focus Mk4 and MK4.5 never used a wet timing belt on the Ecoboost engine. Only the 2.0 Ecoblue has one (ask me how I know).

The wet oil pump belt is expected to last up to 10 years, but for safety most would recommend that it be changed at 8 years.

I read exactly that and I'd do the same around the 7/8 year mark I'm just not wanting to buy a car and then a huge repair bill a few miles down the road, what others thing should I be looking out for

Unfortunately it still costs over £1000 to replace the wet oil pump belt as the engine has to be stripped to get the timing chain off in order to get to the oil pump belt.

Depends how long you plan to keep the car, I've had 5 wet belt Fords so far and haven't changed the belt on any of them but I change the car when it's 8 years old. Currently have a Fiesta with a wet belt and will do the same with that (yes I know my profile says Puma, I can only get one car in there). Never had a problem with a wet belt but always serviced every year/12000 miles with the correct Ford specification oil.

Such a poor engineering flaw you would of thought they would have used a chain in the oil pump knowing the issue with the timing belt it just doesn't make sense to me

probably around 5-6 years id imagine funny you say puma that was in my possibilities when looking at fords, I normally do a service yearly and usually under 10k,

I liked the Focus and I like the Puma, I always aim for the smallest car that will carry my photography equipment around concealed in the boot (there is lots of it). A fiesta boot isn't big enough, the Focus was, the Puma is.

I'm relaxed about wet belts, especially the wet oil belt, but I wouldn't want to own a 10 year old car on the original belts.

I think I'll go for it and than blame you if anything goes wrong 😂

As long as I maintain it to the standard I'm use to I should be ok 🤞

You can always add others to your sig as I've done.

Ok went and had a look the engine seems a bit rough not sure if it this engine or what I uploaded a video of anyone can have a look and advice

The chain engines are rougher.  One of the benefits of a wet belt over a rattly metal chain is reduced engine noise...

Is that normal sounds worse than my 2017 diesel, I think a mount on the left side needs replacing as there is a bit more movement than id expect

Bit  hard to assess volume level from a video, but doesn't seem out of the way to me, either. I recall being quite shocked first time I looked under the bonnet of my 1.0 Fiesta with the engine running - sounded like a bag of spanners and looked like it was making a bid for freedom! From inside the car it was smooth and quiet.

My current 1.5 chain cam is certainly no better, but again, ok from inside.

😂 engine making a run for it 😂 I just didn't expect so much movement I still think a mount has gone, still thinking about it, I thought it's a good price at £8.700 for a 23 plate with 20k miles cat s

They 'rattle and shake' by design, Ford call it a feature not a fault.

Looks and sounds like a typical 1.0 Ecoboost to me.

I had one of these from new.  It sounded just as bad.

The mounts are also rubbish, so you might see some improvement from replacing it, but it won't last long.

If you want this sort of thing you need a few more cy!inders!😀

I'll be honest I'm shocked at that, sounds like an old diesel I guess that's what modern cars with the 3 cylinders will sound like going forward

ICE is getting banned altogether soon, there won't be much more 'going forward'.  Ford do seem particularly poor at balancing 3 pots though.  The VAG 3 pots seemed to be a bit more balanced from my limited experience with those.

Also don't forget that modern petrol's now use high pressure direct injection, pretty much the same fuel system as a diesel...
