Focus 1.8tdci won’t start

Featured Replies

Replaced 2 injectors today on focus 1.8tdci car still doesn’t start it turns over try’s start on easy start but won’t keep running any ideas have checked it’s getting fuel to injectors and there’s no codes showing or coming up when trying to start it

No codes with what reader?
If it goes on Easy Start there can't be much wrong mechanically, unless something else has been disturbed?
What is the history, why 2 injectors changed?
If there's no crank/cam correlation, injectors won't switch on.
Need Forscan  for specific codes and live data e.g fuel rail pressure etc etc.
Minor point, were injectors coded if that is required at 2008?

OR other suggestions...

Got it running today after towing it it now starts on the key but runs really rough if I unplug 1 & 2 injectors nothing happens so thinking there’s a problem with 1 & 2 injector

if I remove wires on 3 & 4 car stalls I have checked wires to injectors I have also tried some old injectors but comes up with system malfunction and it’s the snap on code reader does just about everything but code injector

The car was running but had a boot leak so ordered a new boost pipe fitted car started as normal set off to work pulled out of junction got to about 30mph and then car sound like a bag of spanner’s blue smoke no power turned it of got 2 second hand injectors and fitted these car wouldn’t recognise them system malfunction kept coming up on dash so removed these and put old 1s back in and towed it to get it running took nearly 1 mile before it started but now fires up on first turn of key but runs rough

If replacement injectors, when coded with Forscan, show the same issue (i.e. don't work) then they are useless and need to be returned?

You'll need Forscan to also maybe find any relevant codes that Snap On may/or not show.
On what basis did you originally change the two injectors (i.e. what led you to that conclusion) and assume it's a boost leak (rather than boot, Ha Ha!) which is also fully diagnosed and fixed.
As this came from the boost leak, need to start from there, check all is sound (smoke test ideally) then Forscan codes, then re-code injectors.
If no progress I'd say when was the fuel filter last changed, does it need an injector leak off test, what does Forscan Live data for fuel rail pressure and other related parameters indicate?

I notice I'm asking the same questions again which haven't been answered?

OR...?

I changed the injectors because when I unplugged the leads off the injector it didn’t make a difference to the car it still ran the same

don’t have forscan

Forscan is free (unless you need to program and that needs a relatively cheap licence after the trial periods), you just need a lead or the phone/Bluetooth option, a la @unofix:

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

Ok thks will get the lead and download the program see what it comes up with

Cars running now but came up with p2263 code when I rev it up and let of the acceleration it sounds like I have a dump valve and black smoke

Check the large boost pipe back left as you're standing in front.  There's probably a split on the bend.

Have checked with smoke machine no leaks

Wouldn't trust smoke machine for that pipe.  They seal up under low load, only opening at higher boost pressure.

It’s brand new

Boost pipe is brand new

Ok, you didn't say which pipe was new before, I didn't realise it was that one.

Dump valve noise and black smoke usually does indicate a boost leak though, and that seems to be backed up by the latest fault code as well.

Get someone trustworthy to rev the engine hard and ideally under some load in gear (slipping the clutch) while you feel around the pipes for a leak.  As said earlier, smoke test doesn't work for leaks that only open up under load.  It could even be a loose clamp that holds fine under low load.

Have noticed that unplugging injector 1 doesn’t make much difference to how the car runs have tested the wires which is ok and swapped the injector with 1 I know works used forscan to see if there’s any faults but only shows code for injector did get code p2263 which I found was the turbo actuator was not moving so I sorted that but still smokes and under power carnt find anymore leaks
