Knocking when cornering

Featured Replies

Another little problem lol

When I corner and the road is bumpy, I get a knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from the front right somewhere.   It sounds a bit like when my bushings were going in my old car, but this only happens when cornering.

I've had a good search and a lot say it could be the CV joint.  Is there any way I can test this or does anyone have any other idea on what else could be?

Thanks

Just to add, I got some receipts when I got the car and it had these done on it last year.

I had a noise like that, on closer inspection it was the bushes on the wishbones, changed both wishbones with complete assemblies, noise went away and drover smoother, then another knocking became apparent, was the big bushes on the rear suspension arms, changed them too, drove like it should with no noises, now I've got a new noise, a creaking on the front left suspension, it never ends when cars get older.

Thanks I’ll check these as well.

it does sound like the bushes tbh but with it only happening when cornering its a bit strange.

I found another thing as well though today.  If I purposely go In The wrong gear and accelerate the engine rattles like mad and sounds like it gonna fall out so don’t know if a mounts broke in there as well or if that’s  just a diesel thing as this is the first time I’ve had one.  It did obviously shake in my petrol car when I did this but it didn’t sound like it was gonna fall out 😂

A bit to add to this it's possible that if when you've changed the obvious also check your wheel hub as they can be damaged too if the other parts aren't done basically straight away the hole for the lower arm can be enlarged slightly enough to keep the knocking noise going but remains noticeable. As to your diesel engine sounding like it might drop out it could be either 1 or all of the engine mounts bushes, but from the sound of it it could be your dog bone 1 the engine to sub frame 👍

Ok thanks buddy

Is there any way to test if it’s the dog bone mount?

Little update.  I had a nosey around this morning to see if i could find anything that's loose and noticed the radiator has quite a bit of play in it. I took the plastic covers off and saw that these bushes are quite worn, allowing the radiator to move.  I swapped them around to test and there is hardly any play, so I'll definitely need to order some new ones.

So this is one reason as to why it's rattling, so we'll see how much that affected it lol

This is quite a common issue on the Fiesta.  I'd forgotten about it until reading this.  Someone else on here had a rattly Fiesta recently which may still be unsolved.  Possibly @madcourier?

It was madcourier yeah, I've been following that thread and trying things that have been suggested as well lol

( sorry about delay ) The best way to see if it's the dog bone 1 if if someone revs it while you look at it, the engine basically shouldn't move back to front in a twisting motion. You'll more than likely see the top end pull towards the wind screen, if it's either side mounts the engine will move more easily by hand at the side that's gone. The engine should rally sit stiff in place.

I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back.

Thanks

Not a problem, anything that helps find the problem is good self repair is even better lol. Learning is the best tool we have 😎👍

Yep.That would be me! Ive still to find the time to check if its loose top-mounts to shocks, but keeping my eye on this too

If the top mounts good, the way to check the lower arm bolt ( if possible ) jack bar or metal bar in between the drive shaft and arm then push down, if it moves down then the hub carrier it's self has gained space to allow for the knocking ( but also check if the nut hasn't come loose ) it's always a possibility.

So, an update on this.  I took it to the garage and @Ian Lanc was right about the knocking, it was the bushes on the offside wishbone.

The other issue was the vibrating, and that was due to the rear transmission mount as @doggsbody said. I think that's what the dogbone is anyway. 🤣

Thanks for all your help everyone.  If I had a more time and space I could have fixed these myself with you guys diagnosing the faults👍

Always great to hear the problems are fixed, try to stay clear of the potholes, its the holes that wreck the bushes.

Changed the anti-roll bar bushes on our car, thinking it's them which is causing the noise,
nope the noise is still there, garage checked the bushes in the wishbones and he said
they are fine, only other cause is the top bush on top of the suspension.....Ruddy cars.

That is very good to hear, we can get the diagnosis wrong 😂 it's good when it's found to be right like 👍🏻 the rear transmissionmount is the dogbone1 yes everythinghas a technical name l only know a few of them 😂😂 ..

Ian Lanc the creak on yours does it happen in reverse when turning or just turning in general ?
