Random noise in gear 2 !!

Featured Replies

Hi, hope you guys are well

Ford fiesta titainium 2014 1l ecoboost

Last week after a 1hr motoway jounrney, I noticed a weird noise coming from the car in gear 2 17mph-20 mph @ 1700 to 2000 rpm. This noise appears regardless if I accelerate gently or harshly. The noise doesnt appear below this rev range or above. I did this in gear 1 aswell but didnt make any noise.

I took my car for a free exhaust check to Ats euromaster and said everything below is fine and nothing is loose. Now im thinking if it could be something more serious.

Could this be an gear box issue or engine mounts?

Also, I have had the wetbelt changed and had a proper job done by Aarons Autos.

Any input would be appreciated

Thanks

Do you really think that it could be an gearbox fault?

What makes you think that? I not sure if i could hear it in gear 3 due to road noise in the cabin.

The car pulls well in gear 2 and in other gears, no power loss doesnt pop out of gear no grumbling sounds. The noise goes away at higher speeds.

I'm hearing some kind of rattling. Looks to be coming from between motor compartment and the dash. Not really sure if it's in the center or from the lefthand side.

Really sounds like something is rattling with the vibration of the engine. It's not there when idling.

The Fiesta MK7.5 with the 1.0 ECOBoost engine has the old Ford/Getrag IB5 transmission combined with a solid flywheel.

Ford has used the IB5 transmission for many Years on most of the lower powered engines because it was cheap to produce.

The IB5 transmission was introduced in 1995 and is basically a further development of the old BC4 (4-speed) and BC5 (5-speed) transmission family which was introduced in 1976. The 5-speed BC5 and IB5 transmissions were originally developed as a 4-speed transmission with an added 5th gear. The IB5 transmission that is used on the 100 HP and 125 HP version of the 1.0 EcoBoost has a rated maximum torque of 170 Nm. The maximum torque output of the 100HP version of the 1.0 EcoBoost is also 170 Nm (and in real life usually even a bit more).

On the other hand, vibrations of the 3-cylinder engine are directly transferred to the transmission due to the absence of a dual mass flywheel.

Gearbox damage caused by the relative high torque and vibrations of the 1.0 EcoBoost engine is quite a common problem. Symptoms usually are excessive bearing noises or hard shifting (especially 1st and 2nd gear are affected).

I am not experience any mechanical problems with car and gearbox as I dont have any issues with shifting nor makes bearing noises. It pulls good and drives well. I just makes a sound in a narrow rpm band 1700 to 2000 rpm. I just dont know what the sound is.

Also i just remembered. A previous garage said that its missing alternator mounts/bolts. Could this be an cause of the issue?

As a reference to what jw1982 said about the gearbox being an ib5 it sounds like no surprise to me l have a mk6 escort n the gearbox went on that ( sounding like passenger to center of the car ) the noise only happened when at certain speed for so long then you eventually hear it constantly. With mine due to buying another gearbox l stripped it down to see what had happened and if I'd be able to repair it as a back up. It turned out to be the pinion cog that had worn away ( in simple terms the cog that turns the drive shafts eat its own teeth away ) If the sound is anything like wob wob then you know that's what is slowly happening ( mine is only a 1.6 90+ bhp so the more powerful ecoboost would definitely have no problem churning them up ) 🤦‍♂️
