Misfire cured in my Mk 1 Focus

Featured Replies

Mk1 Ford Focus 1.6

I've had a misfire for the last few weeks, so I went on to the common problem page on this site. It seems the problem was the coil pack.

New coil pack from ebay - £18, New plugs locally £18, new plug leads from ebay - £17, misfire gone!

Easy enough to do the job, I actually had all the correct tools in my garage. Some of the screws are a bit fiddly and I dropped the star bit at one point, but it fell all the way through and I got it back.

I have to admit, I've worked on worse engines, at least I could see and get at everything I needed to remove and refit. I wonder how much a garage would have charged to do the job?

Update

The misfire has not just come back, but is worse than ever, actually getting the car moving is possible provided I'm facing downhill. Uphill? FORGET IT!!!

Has anyone any suggestions (apart from scrap the car) I'm seriously wondering what to do next. I don't have access to a fault reading piece of equipment - the engine warning light comes on, and sometimes flashes when driving at over 40mph. The fuel economy has gone from 35mpg to 22mpg.

HELP

Did you fit the right plugs?

Are they secure?

Has one cracked whilst fitting

The cheap Ebay leads or plugs or coil pack could've packed up already.

Try genuine parts

Fit genuine (yes they are expensive) Ford parts. Or the alternative is to scrap the car.

I think I'd take a chance and buy a new coil pack and leads.

Good suggestions both. The plugs are fine, I think the suggestion regarding the Ford part is a good one, I just worry about throwing money at the car, it only cost me £300, once I start approaching that figure in trying to fix it the thing goes to the scrapper!

Cheap HT leads can be a problem too

Replaced the coil pack with a bosch oem one, instant cure for the misfire!

Thanks for the help guys - it may have cost more, but that's cheaper than scrapping the car.

Further update . . .

Driving home from work two weeks ago, gently round a roundabout and sudden scraping noise and illegal sports car exhaust sounds. Damn, exhaust broke .

New exhaust (whole thing front to back) about £400.

That's more than I paid for the car, but I love the damn thing, it's just so nice to drive and since I bought better seats from a more up-market version of the Mk1 it's really comfy.

So

I've bitten the bullet and gone ahead with the new exhaust. The car has now cost me £300  + £94 for the coil pack + £20 for the seats + £400 for the exhaust.

That's made me realise I will never in a million years recoup that if I sell it, unless I find a moron!

Hey ho - here's to the open road (on the Isle of Man the white circle with black diagonals means end of speed limit - that's right, unrestricted. If you have a car or bike capable of 180mph, then it's legal to go at that speed - wheeeeee)

It's still cheap motoring! (CAR=Cash Always Required)... as long as there are no other massive jobs obvious now.

£800 ish, that's equivalent to a couple of months repayments on a new car or maybe 3 months on a good used one. I think you are getting value for money.

I totally agree with that pcaoulte. The 1.6 is a lot stronger in the mk1 focus it's not amazing on speed but it will probably outlast the 1.8/2.0 if all was given to the average boy racer.

A lot of the 1.6 engine disappeared due to people wanting more power n how many of them will still be around now ? Granted a few of them probably went into mk3/4 escorts but l doubt many of them got the hell revved out of them as bad as the focus will have trying to race civics and the like 😂
