% power loss and engine maintenance warning

Featured Replies

Hey guys, a bit of a strange one.  When driving for more than about 40 minutes. I get an engine maintenance alarm on the dash and what seems like a loss of power. Car is still drivable but seems about 30% loss of power.
if I stop turn off the engine, it’s ok for a while.

i’ve plugged it into Forscan and can’t see anything obvious, but admittedly I may be looking in the wrong place.

anyone seen this before (focus Titanium EcoBoost 1.0 2015).

a real head scratcher as it only does it on  longer journeys.

Do you get an oil pressure light? Otherwise get a compression test done on the engine, I bet it will be either cylinder 1 or 3 misfiring due to compression issues if it's not an oil pressure issue.

Thanks, No I don’t get an oil pressure warning , just the generic engine maintenance warning light.

Would Forscan identify this in the ECU history ?

If it has a misfire code then yes, also when was the last time the spark plugs were changed?

I’ll take a look at the codes in Forscan.

Last service 1st June. I assume that was when the spark plugs were changed. But might just swap them out as a precaution.

Ford schedule is spark plugs every 3 years on this engine.  So I wouldn't assume they were replaced at the last service without some evidence.

The best evidence being the thud as you fall off your chair after seeing the price of the things.

Waited for the error to happen again and kept my laptop in the car. Happened again today.

looks like a turbo issue. Anyone know if this is a screwed turbo or something else ?

Could be the turbo.  But first you should check the vacuum pump valve.  And if that is in good condition then try replacing the boost solenoid.  These parts are much cheaper than a new turbo.

Replaced the vacuum pump and boost Solenoid. Didn’t fix it. Local garage have told me that there is lateral movement in the turbo so that’s *****.
is it worth buying a turbo second hand via eBay or is it a false economy? What turbo would recommend. I think the Ford one is about £380 ?
what have other people done ? Cheers

Your better off buying a new turbo with a warranty as a used one is russian roulette, and a new one with warranty at least gives you reassurance of if it is DOA that you can get a replacement.

Do you know if the wetbelts have been replaced?

The turbo failure could be caused by a lack of oil pressure.  If that is the cause then a replacement turbo will fail fairly quickly as well.  Oil pump clogging up with bits of degrading wetbelt is the usual cause of oil pressure loss on this engine.

£380 sounds cheap for a brand new genuine Ford turbo.  I'd be expecting at least double that. Not worth buying second hand or aftermarket if the genuine one is that cheap.

The wetbelt hasn’t been done, it’s my next decision. Getting quotes but looking like £1,500 -£2,000. Plus whatever the turbo will cost. Looking to see uneconomical for a 15 plate car that’s probably only worth £3.5k. Might be better to cut my losses.

Decided to keep the car on the road. Wetbelt has been done. Now Turbo needs replacing.

Does anyone know the correct Turbo (original Ford) part number for

2015 Mk3 1.0 EcoBoost. Seems to be loads of different part numbers out there and what would be the standard price I should expect to pay ?

Short answer is no. Look for the long part number on your turbo so we can confirm. The turbo is different between 100bhp and 140bhp models. However a 125bhp model (most common in UK) could potentially be either.

Genuine turbo direct from Ford will be over £1000.

Thank you, I’ll take a look at the one fitted to confirm.

If it’s £1,000 from Ford, is there a recommended OEM brand that worth buying ?

Continental are the only OEM supplier of 1.0 EcoBoost turbochargers.

They don't sell to the public directly. You would have to find a UK distributor. They do appear to sell turbos through Autodoc but they are still over £700.

There are many aftermarket brands available now, but I do not know how the quality compares.

I was reading a bit on merc tractors - the bits that matter are available like a replacement cassette and available for £250 vs £1250 for a load of pointless housings that don't wear out

is that idea out there for fords

also found this £171

That's a remanufactured turbo. Only as good as the person doing the refurb and the aftermarket parts they've used.

You can just swap the cartridge for an aftermarket part, however the wastegates and bypass valves do wear out on the 1.0 EcoBoost turbo, so not necessarily pointless replacing the full assembly.

Any recommendations on after market turbo that have a good reputation for reliability. Don’t want to waste my money, but saving a bit of money rather than spending £1,000+ on a Ford turbo sounds like something I should consider.
