S Max - X Sport -2013

Featured Replies

Hi

my S Max has covered just 69,500 miles and Ford have recommended that I get the timing belt changed as the belt is due to be changed at either 10 years old or 100k miles.

Would you recommend changing the timing belt and if so would the chains need doing aswell?

Thanks

Jas

YES !!

You don't say what engine, but in any case it is way overdue on a 2013 model

If the oil has been changed regularly, the chain and tensioner is likely OK:

Changed belt idlers and water pump (Gates kit) at 10 years, now 14 years and 120 000 miles.

Which is the best kit timming kit to buy

Either Ford but likely way more expensive than others and probably made by them anyway or any Tier 1 supplier such as Continental, INA, SKF, Dayco, Gates which was the kit used by our garage. They would not warrant their work if I wanted any other make.
If you aren't DIY then stick to the brand your mechanic uses and don't skimp - get the full kit as the idlers or water pump can be  equally likely to fail?
It's also a good opportunity to replace the coolant (which will have to happen anyway?)
Alan (channel linked above) has several relevant videos and there are masses of others. Crankshaft bolt looks like the major issue that needs planning for?
Be prepared to sit down if you ask a Ford dealer  for a price 😉
