CAN Bus analysing and emulating MK8 Fiesta

Featured Replies

I retrofitted a digital IPC into my 2018 Fiesta MK8,  and since then i have lost the ability to engage ECO mode, i think this is because the cluster is expecting a 3 mode car like on the ST and MHV models, eco, normal and sport however my ST Line only has normal and ECO.

No one seems to be able to work out why it no longer works however re-fitting my old cluster restores the functionality so i was thinking perhaps i could " Sniff " the canbus using a data analyser connected to the HS+ and HS- and GND connectors using a USB Pibiger canbus to usb adapter couple with something like  SavvyCAN to read the data when i push the button, see what the analogue IPC then sends out and try and duplicate it so i can send the same data out when the digital cluster is installed, i'm not sure what canbus version the fiesta uses though, the adapter says.....

High-speed USB To CANFD Converter Compatible with CAN2.0A, CAN2.0B, CAN FD;
CAN FD bit rates from 25 kbit/s up to 12Mbit/s,Timestamp resolution up tp 1μs;

Do you think that this is something that is possible to do or not worth the investment to try and work it out ?

The software is free and the analyser is about £51 and would connect directly to the canbus cables NOT the ODB port.

any info, suggestions etc would be grateful, its annoying not having the ECO function

What Firmware is in the digital IPC? What donor vehicle did you get it from?

  • Author

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what firmware it's on or donor vehicle it is, the problem is the IPC is expecting a different can bus signal which it never receives.

You will probably find my posts on the ForScan and FMODS forums and the the many other posts over the years asking about eco button. It's because my car only has 2 modes, if it was the MHEV version with 3 would have worked.

That's why I'm wondering if I can capture the signal going in and then the signal coming out of my original cluster and just send that instead.

No ST Line models ever had digital clusters only 3 mode fiestas.

Putting my old IPC back in restores the function.

With you.

So no 2 mode cars ever got digital cluster? What about non-MHev Pumas?

And I suppose you can't get your car to have three mode either?

Other cars have Eco, Normal or Eco, Normal & Sport or as with the mhev eco, normal and eletric i guess which is the 3rd mode.

Mines stuck in normal (blue screen) eco is green and sport is black/red/

I assume that because mine doesnt have 3, that the cluster is seeing normal mode as the base mode and cant go up or down as its not getting the right signal.

Ive just been looking at the diagrams and it looks like you can access the HS3+ and HS3- can signals from the gateway ( ODBII) module under the steering column.

What im planning to do when i get chance is splice into those cable and have a couple of fly leads i can mess with, get my old IPC cluster out of storage and connect up a live and an earth and just connect the HS3+ and - to it, just to see what happens, if i cant to my storage unit for a while then ill put a scope on the wires and just see whats going on when i press the eco button.

I had a spare mode button unit which i bought from the same car i got the IPC from back when i didnt understand how the fiesta worked and hadnt done as much research as i have now, so just opened it and its literally just a button that sends signals back down the wire using resistors so nothing clever inside like chips or anything so its nothing to do with that, id say that button goes back to the BCM and that sends out the signal to work, which is why when i put my original ipc back in all works again.

Just going through a few ideas to try and figure it out, if i have to start spending loads of money i wont bother but it would be nice to get eco going if i can.

Ive just looked at i cant find any Pumas that arent MHEV, the newer 2025 seems to have a different dashboard looking on you tube although layout is simmilar.

We have had the odd poster on here from ROI where the Puma was sold with a diesel. Don't know if that would be any different to the petrols which afaik have 5 modes - normal, eco, sport, slippery and trail.

The early Puma autos were non-MHEV - but I've not seen anything to indicate the modes were any different.

The MHEV cars cannot run on electricity only so there is no "electric" mode as such - so on MHEV Fiestas it's just the usual normal, sport and eco.

What years are they ? My cluster is the newer version without the clear plastic covering the screen although when I checked ages ago when first looking into it last August, I can downgrade the firmware as well as upgrade from memory, I'll have to plug in again and check.

I'm not clear exactly which cluster you have.

Below (top)  is my 2023 ST which, afaik was in the Fiesta Mk 8.5 facelift from late 2021, where fitted. Modes differed between models, ST having 4, other models 3.

Puma (middle) had the similar screen (with 5 modes) up until the late 2024 facelift when it got the current effort (bottom).

The top 2 are the same screen and is also fitted to the focus, from memory and I'm going back a year now when I fitted mine, the part numbers are the same but the preceding vehicle number was different, L1TT, NX7T, N1BT etc... the bottom screen is the newer one which has a different look to it, I've not seen one close up so not sure if it has the same connectors or not. I think the extra modes you described are for the stability or traction control like winter, wet etc.

Mine is the top one without plastic cover on the front.

I've done quite extensive tests with the digital cluster, I downloaded about 20 as builts from puma, focus , fiesta and tried them all, in the end I screen shot every setting in forscan, manually typed it into a spreadsheet and printed it out, then went through every setting ( yes I'm that sad 😂). I just wanted to check I hadn't missed anything, but it did make me very knowledgeable on all the settings people were talking about trying to get rid of when they took it from an MHEV, how to add granular on screen brightness gauage by enabling DIMMII etc.

Only thing I haven't done is try other firmwares because I was worried about bricking it, forums are full of people messing their modules up.

Having updated a couple now I think I'd be more inclined to try playing with that but from what I can tell most people who did the mod before me on forscan/ FMODS haven't bothered and tell me it's just not possible.

That's why I wondered if it was possible to fake the signals that the car is expecting from the IPC as it's never going to send them itself.

It could also be because it's just not fully compatible, like when I fitted rear electric windows, I used the newer black label modules and whilst they did work, global unlock/lock didn't work and the led lights on the buttons didn't either they were out of the 2019+ fiesta I think.

I'm not really sure if it can be fixed in all honesty but I thought it might warrant some cheap time spending on it see if I can at least work out why it's not working.

I've done cluster flash, it is risky but if you have a good quality connection and lead and connect a battery charger it's fine.

Takes well over half an hour though

Problem is I don't know if it's worth updating to another firmware that doesn't work. I feel like the canbus route would be the winner.

Well that's why I mentioned firmware at the beginning.

If it had the right level in you will find it will work

  • Author

But others have tried different versions, models from different cars and none work, there's post going back to 2021 on FMODS about it. I feel if it was as simple as a firmware downgrade (probably needs downgrade as the one I've got is a 2024 January model) / strategy fix Somone would have have done it.

I will go to the car in a little while and screenshot the firmware that's on it and what's available.

this is my current calibrations and firmware that it came with

This is the factory forscan says it should be

and these are the calibrations that are available.

This one i thought i bought was a puma but N1BT is the MK8.5 fiesta 10849 is the part number which is same on focus and puma and fiesta

FAC version i think is the oldest one as from ebay pics it has the clear plastic cover on the front which mine does not.

Picked up a replacement analogue IPC now (didn't want to use my original one I removed and stored)

I've also purchased a ODB extension cable to see if I can chop it up.

I tried to power the IPC on the bench by putting 12v on PIN8 and GND on pin 3 which according to the fiesta circuit diagram is the main lives but guessing it needs some other signals in order to wake up, maybe HSCan 3 ?  Not sure yet

So i was right, its a can bus thing with the new IPC. Connected both clusters at the same time and eco mode was restored.

I have now built a can bus sniffer based on an ESP32 module and CanBus transeiver to see what i can find out, then send some code back into the car system

  • 1 month later...

I'm trying to activate ECO mode on the PUMA display.

It's difficult to get it to work, I'll send you what I've already done here!

I made the changes in Forscan but nothing worked, it remained the same.
Only a different screen appeared on the display, but it doesn't show any information. I imagine that the ECO mode is inactive because the panel is not receiving the signal.

That's not eco mode, that's the screen that gives you help driving more economical it's freely available from the IPC config screen, can be turned on and off using the drop down. Eco mode on these clusters makes it go green, shows a leaf and changes the whole look.

Let's make this work? I'll be very happy to see my display changing color.😁

I'll show you what I did to test it, but it didn't work: NOTHING HAPPENED. Only the Eco Behavior display appeared, but I still can't change between ECO and NORMAL modes.

FIRST
1. Connect the OBD2 adapter to the car and open Forscan on your laptop.

2. Turn on the ignition (engine off is sufficient).

3. In the sidebar, click on the chip module icon (Configuration and Programming).

4. Look for IPC – Module configuration (As-Built format) and open it.

5. Forscan will show several lines in the format:

The first byte of line 720-01-01 is where the bits that enable/disable menu functions like Eco Mode in the Fiesta are usually located.

In the Fiesta, Eco Mode is usually enabled by a bit in 720-01-01 (in some cases in 720-02-01 depending on the year).

Attention:

• This may activate additional menus, but if the Puma's firmware doesn't actually have the Eco Mode code, the button may still not work — but it's worth testing because it's reversible (just switch back to 0F if something feels strange).

DISPLAY PUMA (BEFORE)

720-01-01  0F4A  3464  203A

720-02-01  8B20  3C70  1697

720-03-01  3201  9000  00EE

FIESTA ORIGINAL 2018 (AFTER)

720-01-01  0C4A  005A  0000

720-02-01  0011  0000  00

720-03-01  0000  0000  00

SECOND

Next quick test
We can check the BCM As-Built and see if the byte that activates Eco Mode is still active.

This can be done in Forscan by going to: Configuration and Programming → BCM (Body Control Module) → As-Built format

PUMA

726-12-01 0A0A 1211 0279 (BEFORE)

FIESTA

726-12-01 020A 1211 0279 (AFTER)

Reference values for the Fiesta:

• 02 → Eco Mode present.

• 00 → Eco Mode absent.

• 06 → Eco Mode + Shift Indicator active.

• Other values may indicate different combinations (depends on the equipment).

What would it be in the original Fiesta?

• For the 2018 Fiesta with Eco Mode active, this first byte is usually 02 or 06 (depending on whether the Shift Indicator is also active).

• In your case, 0A means that the BCM is telling the rest of the car:
"I don't have Eco Mode, but I have another type of drive mode."

Hex Value Main Function
00 No drive modes, no Eco.
02 Eco Mode active (and possibly gear shift indicator, depends on the rest of the line).
06 Eco Mode + Shift Indicator active.
0A No Eco Mode, with another type of drive mode (usually Normal/Sport — used in the Puma).
0E Sport + Normal + no Eco (ST configuration).

THIRD

The IPC configuration code, in Pumas, forces the enabling of the "Drive Mode menu" (with Eco and Sport) even in models that came without it. This would cause the dashboard to always show the current mode.

Code to enable "Drive Modes" menu in IPC (Puma)
1. First, back up using FORScan (save the original As-Built).
2. In the IPC module (720-xx-xx), locate line 720-07-01.
3. The first byte of this line controls which modes appear in the menu.

PUMA

720-07-01  0001 0000 0030 (BEFORE)

FIESTA

720-07-01  0801 0000 0030 (AFTER)

📌 Most common values:

• 00 → No modes (hidden screen)

• 04 → Normal and Sport only

• 08 → Normal and Eco only

• 0C → Normal, Eco and Sport (recommended in your case)

Any opinions or comments on the changes that have been made? Am I on the right track?

I see your always editing the as-built data, is there no what I call Plain Text options in the IPC configuration screen for these settings ?

I know for example your editing as built to get Eco Behaviour on screen but that is definitely an option in plain text config screen.

It might work. I made those changes in the AS-BUILT file just to test, keeping the original Fiesta settings even though it's a Puma dashboard, but it didn't work. I also made changes in the IPC CONFIGURATION by activating ECO mode, but that didn't work either.

This is my Puma painel.
