Instrument cluster bulb replacement 2005 mk5 1.4 tdci

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a 2005 1.4 tdci and been chasing the dreaded EAC fail for some time now.

I'm now looking into the fact that I do not have the heater coil light illuminating on the instrument panel when I turn on the ignition prior to starting and wondering if I have an electrical problem in that area causing the EAC. No starting problems by the way just the EAC error kicks in shortly after starting. I can cancel it when engine reaches about 60°C and will be fine stop starting all day until it the engine is cold again.

I want to check I actually have a functioning bulb in the cluster first before I start poking around and there is my current problem.

I can get the cluster out and stripped down to the circuit board and panel but can't see how to get the actual circuit board off the back of the instrument panel. It would seem to me that the speedometer and rev counter needles are all that are stopping this board from coming off but I am reluctant to force anything.

Do these needles pop off?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Why don't you just use the instrument cluster 'Self Test' ? It checks all gauges and all lights. No need to take anything apart.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Locate the reset button: on the instrument cluster, usually on the left side.
  2. Press and hold the button .
  3. Turn the ignition key: to the "II" position, which powers up the dashboard but doesn't start the engine.
  4. Watch the display: for the word "tests" to appear.
  5. Release the button: once "tests" is displayed.
  6. Observe the self-test: The instrument cluster will perform a gauge sweep test, where all the needles will move from their minimum to their maximum positions.
  7. Press the button again: to cycle through other tests, such as the LED test, which illuminates all the indicator lights on the dashboard.
  8. To exit the test mode, simply turn the ignition key off.

This self-test can help identify problems with your instrument cluster, such as faulty gauges or indicator lights.

And he's gone............

Thanks DaveT70, I didn't know about this I have just done it and I do have a preheat light working which is interesting.

Going to start looking into that area for my EAC fail, maybe the glowplug timer relay will be my next bit to change in my game of parts darts, I seem to remember reading it was a scheduled service item at one time so worth a try.

Thanks again.
