Chasing the ever elusive EAC Fail cause.

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I have been chasing the cause of an EAC Fail for the best part of this year.

This is a Fiesta 2005 1.4 tdci I am talking about.

I am actually living with it at the moment because I discovered back in May that if I start her up and let her sit until the coolant shows a temp of around 60°C, about 10 mins, I can cancel with my OBD2 scanner and the fail will go and the car will stop and start perfectly all day until she cools again.

When cold prior to starting the only error codes I get are P0380 Glowplug circuit control.

She starts on the button so I am not convinced it is the actual glowplugs and I would not think that if they were failing it would throw this error anyway. But what do I know?

When I do start from cold the engine runs ok, it gets a bit lumpy when the error kicks in after a few seconds and I do get a bit of smoke, nothing serious.

If I cancel the DTC’s a few times I seem to be able to make this smoke stop but it may be nothing to do with what I am doing. I mean she may just be a bit smokey anyway when cold.

This all started after I changed the fuel filter which led to me having to also change the priming bulb tubing assembly because of an air leak in the old priming bulb.

I went for an aftermarket jobby on this pipe work because the Ford replacement seemed prohibitively expensive, I mean hundreds of £££ when the Chinese bits where sub £50.

I see there is a sensor in this network of pipes, is that going to be my likely culprit because there must be some reason for the high price from Ford?

I made these changes and I took her up the road for a good run and she was fine. The next day I set off and the EAC Fail appeared after about a minute and here I am today.

This is what I have done since to chase down this error

I have changed:

the glowplug control module/relay

the coolant sensor and thermostat

the accelerator pedal, (which the error message is supposed to be about)

I have made a general check of the wiring to the sensors that I can see and get to.

My next move in my game of parts darts was going to be the MAF sensor but I thought I would run this past you people first.

Thank you in advance.

In before @unofix 😉

You need to use ForScan to read any fault codes properly, a generic code reader will be of no help to you.

I'll let @unofix supply the correct links. 👍

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

You won't be able to read the Ford specific DTC's with a generic code reader.

Get yourself set up with FORScan and the correct vLinker cable and see what the problem is.

Do Fiestas suffer with the cluster faults, like Focus 2??

I'd suspect that

Mickywrx, unofix and DaveT70 thanks for the heads up on the FORscan stuff, I will get that ordered and hopefully sort my problem. Thanks again.

Not as much as the Focus, but yes the 2005 Fiesta instrument cluster does suffer with soldering issues.

Following your advice I have set myself up with FORscan but I have had to go with the Lite version on android because I do not run any Windows devices.

Bluetooth interface arrives Monday.

Is this going to give me what I need or do you recommend the full fat Windows version?

For diagnostic work it is exactly the same as the Laptop version.
