Tearing my hair out with my Ring doorbell!

Featured Replies

I bought a version called Apache from Wowcher.

Seems to work well, I've got it set up in my old LandRover !

More important than waiting for parcels !  😄

You have a Door Bell set up in your old LandRover ? Why ? 🤔

uPVC door frames usually contain metal reinforcing which can interfere with WiFi signals. Sometimes mounting the doorbell on brickwork next to the door improves the signal.

Security. LandRover is parked at side of house, if anyone is snooping around I get an alert from the Camera.

Just a standalone security camera really.

Mine was mounted on the brickwork. I do wonder what effect cavity ties have on the signal though.

Time for another update. Since moving the doorbell next to the router it has worked without disconnecting for over two months which is pretty conclusive proof it's an issue with the signal. One thing that occurred to me just the other day is that in it's original position it was near to the solar siren of our house alarm. I don't know what frequencies are used but I wonder if there was some interference there. When I removed it from the cupboard where it was sitting next to the router and took it into the kitchen it immediately disconnected so it does look as though it has very limited wireless range.

Today I've reinstalled it on the wall on the opposite side of the door. This means it's about half the distance from the router it was before. I'd estimate around 1 metre. Encouragingly as soon as I inserted the freshly-charged battery it reconnected all by itself so we'll see if that change of position is enough to make it reliable. The alarm panel is in the same cupboard as the router so until I can be reasonably confident about it staying connected, maybe another couple of months, I won't bother to subscribe to a plan for storing the video. It has all the basic functionality I need without that.

Intruder alarm frequencies are usually well away from WiFi frequencies.

I thought that was likely to be the case, I just didn't know .

Well, it's lasted less than 24 hours in the new location. I'm not wasting any more time on it. It's going in the bin.

Mine went in the bin years ago, and that was even before Amazon bought Ring. 🙁

As an appendix to this thread I thought this might be interesting:

Although I've pretty much decided to bin the useless junk I thought I'd see whether I could get anything from Customer Support as my son, who also has one, said he'd had problems and managed to get his swapped.

After re-phrasing my question a few times I managed to get the AI chatbot to provide an email address so I composed a carefully-worded message describing the nature and timeline of the problem and the steps I'd taken to try to resolve it.

I received a reply the following day which, when I read it, looked suspiciously like it was AI-generated. I've copied and pasted it below so you can judge for yourselves. I think "Dina" is just another bot. I replied asking it outright if it was AI and received another reply today in a very similar vein, avoiding the question, and directing me back to their Contact-Us page which I know will just be another chatbot.

I'm not totally anti-AI, it has very useful and groundbreaking applications in science and medicine but I consider that using it simulate a conversation with a human being, and in fact trying to fool people into thinking they're conversing with one, is completely unacceptable and unethical.

Needless to say the saga ends here.

"Hi Neighbor,
Thank you for contacting the Ring Intercom team. My name is Dina and I'm a customer service representative from the Ring Intercom team.

Kindly note that based on the information and details you've shared, it looks like we'll need to troubleshoot/investigate further in order to work towards a resolution.

Currently, the Ring Intercom Email Team is unable to provide in-depth troubleshooting/assistance here directly.

Not to worry though! You can reach out to +44/0808-196-5767 or contact us via Chat and one of our Ring support associates will be able to help.

Make sure to contact our support line when you are physically with the device as we might need to attempt some steps on the device itself, they also might ask you to trigger an event to check the device health.

Thank you for being the best part of Ring!

Ring Intercom Support"

It does appear Ai generated. I would persevere with customer service, try another way.

You could ask your son how he got through to them, or try googling for an Email ?

To be honest, I fitted a Ring at my daughters and it is still Ok two years on, but she doesn't have the subscription.

My Ring Door Bell is still working fine, now 2 years old. Yes, it deffo sounds like you are talking with a BOT.

As for AI, it's amazing the number of people that trust it implicitly.

AI was asked 2 simple questions about the difference(s) ref the Getrag DCT250 and the DCT450 transmissions - both answers were totally wrong.

Birmingham Police asked AI about specific football supporters/football match and it gave them info regarding a match that NEVER ever took place

I would never trust AI
