SYNC4 and Motorola phones - Contact mismatch

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just changed my Focus from a 19 plate with SYNC3 to a new (2025) one with SYNC4.

Contacts with sync3 worked fine. No updates available for SYNC4 (25031 _Product Revision 1627)

I find that when downloading my contacts to SYNC4 - there are mismatches for some contacts eg look up Bill Smith - might get Jack Jones (with Jack Jones info). This could lead to incorrect outgoing calls, mis-assignment on incoming calls and texts. Also, some contacts may have a phone  number repeated

I have stripped the number of contacts from 340 to 155 & removed any data that could trip it up. VCF exports from phone & google contacts look clean.

This happens with 3 motorola phones (G84 5G, G50 & g7). However with a (2017) samsung A3 - the contacts look fine on SYNC4. All phones are synchronised to Google and have the same contacts.

ChatGPT seems to indicate that there are reports of problems with Motorola phone, Contacts mismatches & SYNC4.

Have deleted caches & app data to no avail. Also have performed Master reset. On the more modern phones am currently trying to unlink Whatsapp & Meet from phone contacts to see if that helps.

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar problems & if so with what phones ?

Have also noticed some issues if using Android Auto (eg no favourites & if a contact has multiple numbers then only one is displayed.) - but that's for another day !

Thanks in advance for any thoughts & info.

I have a 2019 Focus with Sync3, which I've owned for more than five years. Until recently my mobile was a Sony Xperia which worked with the car flawlessly. Sadly the Xperia came to the end of it's life and I replaced it with the Motorola Edge.

Everything appears to work normally with one exception. Each time I get in the car the Motorola Edge will automatically connect as it should. Then after 5 to 10 minutes it will disconnect, and after about 10 seconds it will reconnect. This might just happen once per journey or it may happen a few times.

Like you I've tried multiple different things to stop this 'disconnect - reconnect' behaviour and have now just accepted this is clearly a Motorola issue.

In case this helps anyone else with problems with Contact mismatches with Motorola phones & SYNC4

I believe that the major cause of my problems was due to the incorrect way that my Motorola phones (g7, g50,g84) may handle "Custom Labels". The Samsung handles these in a different way & always correctly.

Within an entry for a contact, Custom Labels can be defined for a phone number, an address and an email address. The email address maybe irrelevant as I suspect that it's not sent to SYNC4.

As an example, for a phone number - the predefined labels include HOME, CELL(Mobile), WORK, OTHER etc and CUSTOM (where you can define your own label).

So you may have an entry contact for a Hospital and several phone numbers eg with custom labels of "Ward15", "Ward18". These labels and phone numbers are correct in the VCF file exportable from the phone (which contents are sent to SYNC4)

However, if you have custom labels of the form "Ward 15", "Ward 18" ie with a space in the string - then these labels are missing in the VCF file. I suspect that this causes corruption of the information sent to SYNC4, which in turn leads to contact mismatches etc.

So I've ensured that I've removed all spaces from Custom Labels from the three fields above. Prior to this, I'd also removed characters that I thought could cause issues in all fields (including ampersand, comma, semicolon, colon)- but what made things work as desired was the removal of spaces in all Custom Labels.

There are a few minor issues I've come across whilst troubleshooting this - but not service affecting as far as I know.

Hope this helps someone !

On a different issue, with your Motorola  phone does either the Sync system or the phone make any 'notification' sound if you receive an e-mail or a text while connected to the car by Bluetooth ?

Very annoyingly mine is completely silent !!

Folks,

Another problem area - in case it helps others. Another reason for missing contacts

If the Google contact contains an address (ie a physical location of home, work etc) - then this address may be encoded with ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE. If this happens then the contact is completely  missing in SYNC4. I assume that this encoding is used if the contact address is amended/created using the Google Contacts app on Android.

If the address is entered on a PC using the Google Contacts option, then the address is stored in a different format which SYNC4 is happy with and the contact details are present.

If anyone knows how to make Ford aware of this without having to go through helpdesk reboot your phone, reset sync4 malarky - feel free to let me know.
