2nd gear grinding

Featured Replies

I'm knew to the forum. I have a 21 plate ford focus ecoboost vignale model. I just bought it in Feb 2025 it had 25,500 miles on clock I have only added 3000 miles since zi bought it and second gear has started grinding. Arnold Clark said outwith 6months for Consumer Rights Act and Ford say outwith 3 year warranty. I need to prove this is a known issue is the TBS 23-2420 definitely for the ford focus 21 plate 1.0 litre. If it is then this proves its a known issue and Consumers Rights can back me up as if its a known issue outwith 6months of purchase I can hold Arnold Clarke responsible to repair at their cost. Any advice on TSB 23-2410 ie how can I find this on official ford website showing its for my car. Thanks

The public can't access the Ford systems that show TSB's.  You would need a Ford worker to find that.

We tracked this down via a link in a German forum, see this thread:

I don't think a forum post counts as legal evidence unfortunately.

No, best I've found so far is:

https://www.tsbsearch.com/Ford/23-2410

Just playing the "Devils Advocate" on this for a sec.

While we on various forums are aware of issues with this box, they are not all affected. Ford could argue that the TSB does no more than provide a methodology for repair IF an issue arises. Arnold Shark could similarly argue that the existence of the TSB is not evidence that this particular car had a fault at the time of sale?

Well done, I'll have to remember that site for future reference.  Oddly it doesn't appear when Googling TSB's...or at least not when I search for them.

When I first found that site I was using Microsoft Bing - just put in "Ford TSB + number" and it was the first hit. Just tried Google with "Ford TSB 23-2410" and it was third (after this site and the Puma Forum).

Hmm, clearly some user error here.  No idea what I was searching!

Thanks for the help with this. Ill have a look at the links. The thing is a gearbox shouldn't fail at 28500 miles it proves there is an issue and it also proves other people are having the same issue which suggest there us a know problem with ford gear boxes👍

some information on TSB. Seems they are issued for common problems this explaind difference between a recall and TSB.

Ford (and other manufacturers) release Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) to help technicians diagnose and repair common, recurring problems in specific vehicle models that are not safety-related. They serve as a supplement to a vehicle's standard repair manual, providing detailed, engineering-level guidance based on real-world pattern failures.
The primary reasons for issuing a TSB are:
Standardize Repairs: TSBs provide authorized dealerships and independent repair facilities with an organized, itemized, and standardized procedure for fixing specific issues.
Save Time: By circulating a known description and solution for a common problem, TSBs save technicians significant troubleshooting and diagnostic time.
Address Non-Safety Issues: TSBs address issues that affect vehicle performance, reliability, or customer satisfaction (e.g., unusual noises, fluid leaks, software glitches) but do not pose an "unreasonable safety risk," which would mandate a recall.
Provide Detailed Information: A TSB usually includes a clear definition of the affected vehicles, specific inspection and repair procedures, and a list of necessary parts.
Inform Dealerships: They are a communication tool from the manufacturer to the service network, ensuring mechanics are aware of the latest information on potential issues.
Key Distinction from Recalls:
Unlike recalls, which are federally mandated for safety defects and must be repaired for free regardless of warranty status, TSB repairs are typically only covered if the vehicle is still within its original warranty period. Ford is not obligated to notify owners of a TSB, and the repair is generally only performed if the owner complains of the specific symptoms and a technician can verify the issue.
