P0016 & P0017 fault codes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have 2011 1.6 ecoboost and have done a battery reset and cleared historic fault codes due to a cooling fan issue which seems to be now working.

but since doing the reset, I have now developed and engine light displaying P0016 and P0017 fault codes which I haven’t had before. I have cleared them but they do come back after some time.

does anyone know where to start with this? Car runs fine with no misfiring

Do you mean that you have reset the Battery Monitor System (BMS) ?

Have you just fitted a new battery ?

  • Author

Yes, I did the “press rear fog 5 times, 3 hazard, wait till battery flashes”

I haven’t fitted a new battery but read somewhere that a battery reset may resolve the cooling fan issue. Maybe find the wrong thing?

It's too late now but the battery monitor should only be reset when you fit a brand new fully charged battery.

That won't have caused your P0016 and P0017 codes which are related to crankshaft and camshaft position sensor problems. When was the timing belt last changed on this engine?

That makes sense now.

the timing was done about 15000 miles ago. Done before I brought the car but had the car two years now

Have used a diagnostic reader and checked live data and the exhaust camshaft position bank 1 is reading -8degress and actual intake camshaft position bank 1 is reading +29degrees. Not sure what they are meant to read?

They are variable so difficult to know whether that's right for the conditions.  They should read 0 with the engine off and just ignition on.

but read somewhere

I'd love to find this 'somewhere' that so many people keep reading incorrect information from. 🤔

Yes I have read wrong information before consulting on here but unfortunately I have already done this so can’t undo it now.

do you know how or what I can check to hopefully get this fixed please

Is the car running fine and without any problems ?

If all seems fine then I'd think those are old DTC's that just need to be cleared using FORScan and the vLinker FS cable. The mobile phone version of FORScan should also be able to clear the codes.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

Yes the car is running fine with no issues at all.

i have attempted to clear them a couple of times now. They do clear but then come back on with the next ignition cycle

  • 2 weeks later...

It's possible that after changing the belt they didn't perform the recalibration. You can do this in forscan but I don't remember what it's called exactly (Crank corelation relarn or something similar) and clear the codes. If it still comes back ,then they probably did a sloppy job but since your your car runs fine that's less likely

Hi guys, sorry thought I’d say that it has been fixed and turns out that it was just a sensor recalibration that was needed, not sure why then it had flagged up but all is sorted now.

thanks again for the help
