Using 10W-40 Oil in high mileage Mk2 1.6 Petrol engine?

Featured Replies

I read somewhere about using 10W-40 oil in this engine at higher mileages as it is thicker than 5W-30.

With 5W-30, I used to have to top up every few months with no obvious leaks. That suggests it must have been burning a small amount.

Since the rear crankshaft seal started leaking, I have been topping up with 10W-40 as I had some spare. The owners manual says that 10W-40 can be used for top ups.

my car has now covered over 150,000 miles. Would it be recommended to run with just 10W-40 once the seal has been replaced?
