Coolant bubbling in tank

Featured Replies

Hello,

I bought a 64 plate focus 57k on the clock a months ago. The coolant is bubbling but only when the engine is switched off. It doesn't appear to overheat whist driving. They and i have done a sniff test which was fine and they have replaced the waterpump, thermostat and temperature sensor but still no luck. Any ideas?

I havent noticed the fan come on how can I test it. It works when the A/C is on though...

It's had a new coolant tank and cap (non genuine cap but have one on order)

Thank you!

If you disconnect the fan temperature sensor from the engine, the fan will run constantly as a fail safe.

If this is a 1.0 EcoBoost it may have the additional electric coolant pump to keep coolant circulating after switch-off.

Thanks Tom it is the 1.0l, does this mean that the bubbling is normal or that the electric pump has failed?

My wife also has the 1.0 but 2012 plate and it doesnt make this noise

Thank you for your help

The bubbling is normal when the pump is running.

Initially, only cars fitted with the optional towbar got the pump as standard, but at some point Ford started fitting it to all of them.

Thanks Tom,

It still seems odd, I can really hear it from the cabin until it settles about 5 -10 mins later. Can I send you a video somehow?

Videos can't be uploaded on this forum directly unfortunately.  You can upload elsewhere (YouTube or similar) and then post the link instead.

If you look at the reservoir when it's making the noise, you should be able to see the coolant running back in from the top pipe.

thanks hopefully this works and somone can confirm if this is normal.

Air lock? Have you tried taking the cap off the coolant tank and revved the engine at 2000rpm for about 5 mins? Had to do that with mine?

Also you absolutely sure the correct thermostat was fitted. I had mine changed then it bubbled and they realised they needed a different thermostat. Apparently there's 2 for focus which operate at different temperatures

Thanks Eli,

It was doing it before the garage changed the thermostat unless they installed an incorrect one again 😂

I have run it with the cap off for 5-10 mins allready.

The car has done 900 miles with this bubbling so guessing it's not a  major issue hopefully.....

Hello sorry to bring this one back up. Took it back to the dealer who took it to another garage who confirmed the headgasket had gone. A reconditioned engine was put in and 3,000 mile later it has started again.... any further ideas. Could it be the turbo causing the headgasket to go or somone else mentioned that it's just the secondary water pump running after the engine is switched off. Any ideas please?

I can't remember how accessible the pump is now. But if you can find it and unplug it for short term, that would rule it out completely.

The weather has been warm recently, with hot sun beating down on the bonnet, so this is the time of year when I'd expect the pump to be running after switch off.
