Advice Please!!! Gearbox issues.

Hi All at the Focus Group,

I would be grateful for any advice.

I have a 2019 Ford Focus 1.5TD Titanium with an 8-speed Automatic with 175,000kms.  Symptoms:  Car will start from cold and drive all through the gears with no issue. After 20mins or so, it just stops, all power failure, wont turn over and basically is a dead duck - 20mins or so later, it will start and drive again and repeat, repeat.

Took to Fords, they originally test drove it, updated the transmission and the diagnostics show a lot of faults linked to the Transmission Control Unit - They contacted their Head Office who returned with the suggestion of a complete New Gearbox, with a nice price of 7,500,00 euros  (£6,588) (I am based in Galway, Ireland)

Although the car has always been fully serviced at Fords, they have never changed or suggested to change the gearbox oil and I just hit 175000 kms.

I am wondering if, as it seems to be Temperature related, it could possible be something other than the gearbox causing the issue - Ford tech said that the oil was dirty and had a slight burnt smell.

Would be grateful for any advice.

Best Regards - Simon.

You just need to tag Dave in on your thread so he sees it when he's next on line. Like this-

Hi, Sorry.

So, sealed for life basically means as long as the transmission lasts for a bit longer than you're extended warranty then we don't care.

170,000km is way too much on original fluid, I'd get it changed ASAP

It will be ULV in yours I bought some Mannol 8222 ULV for my BMW, good value from AutoDoc

Get it changed, I'd change it twice and see if your problem goes away

It sounds like the fluid is completely burnt out, which would cause the transmission to have issues but not the car to die completely

But you've probably caused wear now

You should aim in a Torque Converter box for no more than 80,000 miles

But also, get yourself set up on FORScan and read the codes to see what it's saying

You may just need new fluid, a new battery and some software updates
