Spongy brakes

Featured Replies

Hi. Just bought a 2023 Focus. Have had 3 before this.  Only 5k miles on the clock. But you really have to press the brake pedal to get it working. An awful lot of travel that has never been there in any of the other Focus cars.

Has anyone else come across this.  Not sure if that's what to expect from a somewhat newer car. The previous one was 2019.  Any thoughts?

Thanks

Is the new one MHEV?  They use an electronic brake booster, so the pedal does feel different to the old vacuum booster cars.

But a lot of travel doesn't sound right for any brake pedal.  Brake fluid is recommended changed at 2 years old, so that might be worth trying, but I've never found a spongy pedal after years without a fluid change.  If it's not that then it's likely a faulty caliper where the piston isn't self-adjusting as the pads wear.

Thank you for your response. Yes it is an MHEV.  It's our 5th Focus and I have an Audi. No other car brake pedal has so much travel.  I'm booked into Kwik Fit tomorrow for them to investigate and hopefully ideally find a fix that needs to be applied. I'd be happier spending money knowing that they have rectified something.  Cheers

Your profile says that it is a 2023 Focus ST Line X

If that is true then it is still under the Ford warranty, or is your profile information wrong ?

No you are correct.  But I'm currently working on the basis that it'd be classed as wear and tear unless the garage finds anything serious that could be covered by the warranty.  Thanks

Spongy brakes is better than what youl be left with after puting it to Krook Fit.

I would get it back to the dealer before you touch anything. if any warranty does apply, you will void it by putting anywhere else.
